Children don't need perfect parents.
They need parents who make them feel seen, heard and valued.
Years from now, they probably won't remember every lesson you taught them.
But they'll remember how they felt when they were with you.
And those memories shape the relationship you'll have for the rest of your life.

Every child will make mistakes.
The question is:
When they do, who will they turn to?
If they fear your reaction, they'll often hide the truth.
If they trust your response, they'll come to you first.
That's the difference between parenting through fear and parenting through relationship.

The questions we ask shape the parents we become.
Instead of only focusing on our child's behaviour, it's worth reflecting on our own.
Are we creating an environment where our children feel respected, understood and willing to listen?
Strong relationships don't happen by accident—they're built through everyday interactions.

Children don't stay little for long.
The moments that seem ordinary today will one day become the memories you wish you could relive.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children isn't another toy or another outing.
It's our time.
Because one day they'll stop asking.
Make today count.

We're not raising children to depend on us forever.
We're raising future adults.
That means our goal isn't just obedience while they're young.
It's helping them develop the character, wisdom and confidence to make good decisions when we're not around.
That's the kind of influence every parent should aim for.

Children aren't born distant.
Distance is usually built one interaction at a time.
When they feel heard, they keep talking.
When they feel dismissed, they slowly stop trying.
The goal isn't just to hear your child.
It's to make them feel listened to.
Those everyday moments shape the relationship you'll have for years to come.

Most children answer "How was your day?" with:
"Fine."
Try asking a better question.
"What made you smile today?" "What was the funniest thing that happened?" "What was the hardest part of your day?"
Better questions lead to better conversations.
And better conversations build stronger relationships.

When I wrote A Father's Presence, I didn't want it to be another parenting book that gets read once and forgotten.
That's why every chapter ends with: • A summary • A moment to reflect • Practical actions you can apply straight away
You don't have to finish it in a weekend.
You can work through one step, put it down, practise it, then come back when you're ready.
My hope is that it becomes a guide you return to throughout your parenting journey, not just another book on your shelf.

The first few minutes after your child sees you can shape the rest of their day.

Before you check your phone...
Before you ask about homework...
Before you tell them what needs doing...

Take a moment to reconnect.

A smile.
A hug.
A simple question like, "What was the best part of your day?"

Those few minutes tell your child:

"I'm glad you're here."

Small moments, repeated consistently, build strong relationships.

The longer we lecture, the less our children usually hear.

Real influence doesn't come from talking more.

It comes from asking better questions.

Replace one lecture with one meaningful conversation this week.

You might be surprised by what your child is willing to share.
