The Edinburgh University Club of London

The Edinburgh University Club of London Welcome to the Edinburgh University Club of London, established in 1864 to foster fellowship between graduates, staff & faculty. http://eucl.org.uk/

Welcome to the Edinburgh University Club of London (EUCL). Our Club membership is open to all Alumni, Faculty and Staff of the University of Edinburgh. We are an active social Club, meeting approximately once a month, with around 200 members, most of whom live in Greater London and the South East of England, or in Edinburgh. This may be especially helpful to new graduates once they have left the C

ity of Edinburgh and are perhaps starting out in their careers. We hold a variety of social events throughout each year, and we aim to give EU alumni a good base for maintaining contact with the University, and other alumni especially in Greater London. We can arrange visits to places or events of interest, which may be difficult to arrange as an individual. Our more expensive events (such as the formal Annual Dinner) are subsidised by the Club so can be offered at prices well below their actual cost. The Club has many well connected, senior and seasoned members in their respective professional fields, and we have members in several City Livery companies. We welcome all graduates coming to London to take advantage of this network, by joining us or attending our events as guests. The University is aware that over 8,000 Edinburgh graduates are now based in London, and it is of great interest to the University to support clubs that give alumni a strong sense of the University’s continuing presence and accessibility to them. We are one of the oldest and most active Scottish Alumni associations, linked to the University for over 150 years. We are an independent, non-political club, and we do not have any formal affiliations except with the University and other Alumni Clubs.

Did you know? The Club has had its fair share of literary talent in its ranks. Two prominent members, with two prominent moustaches, were JM Barrie and Arthur Conan Doyle.

Barrie is famous for writing Peter Pan, but his literary career began at Edinburgh University, where he studied literature and wrote for the Edinburgh Evening Courant.

By contrast Doyle studied medicine and served as a ship's doctor before publishing his first story about a detective with whom his name would become synonymous - Sherlock Holmes.

Did you know? We have had our fair share of significant Club Presidents, but one of the most important has to be Sir Joseph Lister, later Lord Lister.

Lister (1827-1912) was a British surgeon, and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery and preventative medicine. He made several contributions to medical science, but without doubt one of his most important was the introduction of carbolic acid as a steriliser, and for promoting the principle of antiseptics.

By sterilising surgical instruments, patients' skins, surgeons' hands, and the wards themselves, he was able to eliminate sepsis from his wards and saw the rate of those who died after his surgeries plummet from 46% in 1866 to 15% in 1870, to 5% in 1877.

Two days before Edward VII’s planned coronation in 1902 the king became ill and had to receive surgery, and the royal doctors first consulted Lister. Six weeks later the king thanked Lister saying, "I know that if it had not been for you and your work, I wouldn't be sitting here today."

It is hard to estimate just how many lives have been saved by Lister’s innovation.

As a side note - such was Lister’s reputation in the field of antiseptics that led American Chemist Joseph Lawrence to name his new product after him in 1879 – Listerine.
