Women’s participation in the workplace has increased dramatically since the 1970s, yet these advancements haven’t always been matched by improvements in wellbeing. Nearly half of UK working women reporting higher levels of stress, with almost a third of those surveyed admitting they have taken time off work for mental health reasons.
We spoke to Schnel Hanson (MCIPD), our Professional Women’s Group co-chair, about women’s workplace wellbeing. With years of hands-on experience in corporate HR, leadership development and organisational wellbeing, she offers guidance on how to manage job stress and prevent burnout.
She highlights the importance of having a support network:
💬 'One thing I emphasise in both my coaching and my HR practice is the professional value of a strong support network. Career development does not happen in isolation, and neither does recovery from stress. Having trusted colleagues, mentors or peers you can be honest with — about workload, about challenges, about capacity — is not a sign of weakness. It is good professional practice.'
