Great to see the solar ice maker project featured on BBC News Indonesia.

A real example of collaboration and innovation in action. And it's already having a big impact:

176 tonnes of ice produced in the first year — an average of 16 tonnes per month

223,520 plastic bags avoided, equivalent to more than 2 tonnes of plastic waste prevented

4,290 litres of diesel replaced with solar energy

40 tonnes of CO₂ emissions prevented annually

US $120,000 added to the local fishery value chain

🏆 We’re a winner, baby! IPNLF proudly announces that our film 'A Truly Plastic-Neutral Fishery' has won the Environmental Awareness Award at Cimasub - Ciclo Internacional de Cine Submarino de Donostia - San Sebastián!

David Sánchez, the director of Cimasub, said that "the film made a profound impact on the jury" and "this pioneering approach of being "plastic neutral" goes beyond common practices in the fishing industry, underscoring a commitment to the future of our oceans. Your short film tells the story of a responsible fleet of fishermen. It presents a global challenge regarding managing our marine resources, which undoubtedly embodies the spirit of the Environmental Awareness Award."

🌊💙 A huge thank you to CIMASUB for this recognition and honour!!

We want to acknowledge and thank Fish4Ever and Biocoop for their incredible support over the years, commitment to the Azores fishery, and responsible, ethical sourcing practices. We also wish to acknowledge and thank our partners of ‘The Plastic Neutrality Project’, launched in collaboration with the Sea Observatory of the Azores (OMA), Programa de Observaçao para as Pescas dos Açores (POPA), IMAR, Associação de Produtores de Atum e Similares dos Açores (APASA), and Federação das Pescas dos Açores (FPA).

Last but not least - PEPE BRIX Doc Photography for creating a genuinely inspiring and award-winning documentary for IPNLF yet again.

'A Truly Plastic-Neutral Fishery' is a film that captures the essence of sustainability and the Azores as a beacon of hope in a world seeking solutions for a healthier, plastic-free ocean.

Where the world points to plastic straws and other single-use plastics as a concern regarding plastic pollution in our oceans, this short film shows the most significant threat. Despite local communities not being primary contributors to this issue, they bear the brunt of plastic infiltration, particularly on small islands.

Everyone should see this film and think about the effect large-scale industrial fishing vessels have on our oceans as opposed to artisanal fisheries whose livelihoods depend on the sea and that catch fish in balance with nature.

If you would like to share our film and stories at your film festival, conference, or event, don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] to discuss options.

With its solar-powered solution, the Solar Ice Maker is already turning heads among major players in the seafood sector. They recognise its potential to revolutionise traditional cold chain logistics, presenting both exciting opportunities for growth and a challenge to outdated practices.

So, what's next? A Future of Opportunity!

Transitioning to renewable energy in the fisheries sector, especially in small-scale fisheries, can be a significant achievement in the battle to address climate change impacts. The launch of the Solar Ice Maker marked a milestone as a game-changer for the seafood industry, philanthropic donors and climate-related investors alike.

The Solar Ice Maker strengthens local cold chain infrastructure and represents a crucial investment in the future of sustainable small-scale fisheries. We are keen to work with our market partners, investors, and the donor community to find scalable solutions that will help ensure long-term market access and improved economic resilience for small-scale fishers and their dependent coastal communities.

Connect with us and play a vital role in shaping a sustainable future for small-scale fisheries and our planet.

Who is to benefit from the Solar Ice Maker?
Small-scale fishers in remote areas worldwide 🌏🤝.

These coastal fishing communities face significant challenges and are often on the front lines of climate change impacts. They urgently need reliable access to electricity, improved skills in fish handling and food safety practices, modernisation of their fishing boats and upgrading of shore-based facilities to maintain a continuous cold chain for their catch.

On the industry side, these small-scale fishers are often out-competed by industrial fisheries and forced to compete in seafood markets that fail to offer them a level playing field. Therefore, the urgency of the issue is clear: Innovative solutions that combat climate change and help them compete on an equal footing in global seafood markets are essential for their future.

As simple as it may sound, ice is a crucial step in the supply chain to achieve a higher-quality product. With this innovation, fishers can nearly triple their income because of the higher-grade tuna they sell. Their product can now be sold to international markets such as Japan and the USA with that grade, which means rural fishers can increase access to global markets and directly improve their livelihoods.

How does the Solar Ice Make work?
100% renewable Energy, 0 greenhouse gas emissions, thermal storage 🧊♻️.

Frank Stegmüller, Lead Industry Decarbonisation and Energy Island Solutions, Energy Programme GIZ Indonesia/ASEAN, explains it in 90 seconds while standing beside the machine in Kawa, Maluku, Indonesia.

"The Solar Ice Maker is an entirely off-grid facility, using solar energy to produce up to one ton of high-quality ice daily. It allows for continuous ice production, enhances cold storage capabilities, and minimises spoilage. Replacing expensive batteries is often one of the most significant costs associated with solar energy applications. The technology used in the solar ice maker overcomes this challenge by relying on thermal energy storage rather than batteries. This shows how the global energy transition can effectively meet local needs while preserving sustainable fishing practices and reducing carbon emissions."

All technical information and specifications of the machine can be found in the Solar Ice Maker Factsheet on our website → Recent News → What is the Solar Ice Maker?
