In India, violence against women, and sexual violence in particular, is everywhere and nowhere at once. It happens on the street, at home, in the workplace, in schools. Yet for generations, it has been met with silence, denial, or blame placed on the women themselves.
Girls learn from a young age to make themselves smaller: to dress a certain way, to avoid certain streets, to stay quiet about what happens to them. Harassment becomes something to endure rather than something to report, because too often there is no one who understands, no safe place to turn to, and no one willing to listen.
Sukhaya Foundation's founder, Abhaynavita-Sarika, lived this reality herself. She understood something that too many organisations had missed: that tackling violence against women requires an organisation led by women — women who know this experience from the inside, not as an abstract issue to be solved from a distance.
