"The place I stand now was a vibrant marketplace, people used to come here for buying and selling."

Bindu Pariyar from our in-country partner ADWAN is standing in the flood debris at Trishuli Bazaar, Nepal. She describes what happened, how neighbours are helping each other search through destroyed homes, and what worries her most now that the relief phase is ending.

Her answer is the rebuilding: helping people heal, getting children back to learning, supporting women to earn again, and replacing the documents families lost. That's the work our Rebuild Nepal fund is here for.

Our Annual Review 2025-26 is here! 📖

This year, 146,000 people were supported through 30 projects with 22 partners across India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Even though it was a year where funding was tighter across the board, the impact of the work still grew. As our Chief Executive, Louise Thomas, puts it: "We did not get bigger this year. Our impact did."

This year, most of the pages go to Bangladesh, where climate change is displacing half a million people every year. Inside, you'll find the stories of our partners Grambangla, Pragya and OKUP, and the communities they're working alongside.

Reflections on Karuna Appeals with Suryadarshini:

'I love swimming in the sea at Brighton...but the main reason I headed to the south coast last week was to visit Karuna's volunteer door-knocking appeal.
For someone who spends most of her week in Norwich with funder guidelines and deadlines, it felt like a tiny holiday. The highlight of my week was visiting the three women on the appeal, who head out each evening to find supporters of Karuna.
This team of volunteers live together, share meals, meditate together each morning — and then head out onto the doors to talk with whoever answers about the communities we work with in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Knocking on a stranger's door, not knowing if you'll get a smile, a polite 'not today', or a forty-minute conversation... it looks so ordinary, and it's actually quite brave.

In Buddhism there's a word for rejoicing in the goodness of others: mudita. That's exactly what I felt on the train home.

Thank you, Izzy, Olivia and Tara. Rejoicing in you all out on the doors, connecting supporters with Karuna's vision and our work in South Asia.

In February, Adam couldn't swim 25 metres. On Sunday the 13th of September, he finished Ironman Wales. A 3.8km sea swim, 180km on the bike with 2,700m of climbing, and then a marathon on top of it.

Adam did it in memory of his friend Raj, who passed away in 2018 and whose family have long been close to Karuna. And he has raised over £3,600 for our work, nearly double his original target.

Adam, thank you. From all of us here, and from the communities in India, Nepal and Bangladesh who will feel the difference this makes.

This is how food and other essentials are reaching people on the far side of the river.

Our partner Future Generation Nepal sent us this footage. The bridges here were washed away in August, cutting whole communities off, so supplies are being pulled across the riverbed on a wire.

FGN are not running this line. Local agencies and first responders are doing that vital work, but FGN wanted to show you, because they know how many of you have been asking about Nepal and its people. This is the answer for now.

The immediate response will not last forever.

Our long history working alongside these communities at times of disaster, whether through the 2015 earthquakes, Cyclone Amphan or the pandemic, means we know what happens after the emergency phase ends.

We promised to keep you updated on the situation on the ground and, over the weekend, we received detailed reports from our local partners. We want to share those realities directly with you.

Nepal Flood Update

Following the devastating flash floods on August 26th, we promised to keep you updated on our partners in Nepal.

Thankfully, our core project areas and partner staff are mostly safe. But the devastation in neighbouring districts like Rasuwa and Nuwakot is catastrophic. Entire schools have been completely wiped away. Over 40 bridges have been destroyed.

Our partner organization ADWAN recently visited the hardest-hit areas to deliver emergency supplies, sharing: "The situation we witnessed was extremely painful... emergency relief is only the beginning."

Right now, incredible first responders are providing immediate, life-saving aid. At Karuna, our role comes next. Like many of you who have supported us through the devastation of past earthquakes and floods, we know that, when the cameras leave, the long, hard work of rebuilding begins.

Our partners have told us that they, like so many families, are still processing this tragedy. They’ve also explained that soon their children will need to rebuild and return to their schools, families will need to restore their livelihoods and communities will have to find a way forward.

We don’t know yet exactly what that will look like - but we want to be ready to stand beside them when they do. Rather than wait to act, we are starting a Rebuild fund to make sure the resources are there when they need them.

As more details come in, we will know more about what shape that need must take. We will continue to update you so that you do, too.
