From New York to Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Toronto, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh's visit to the US and Canada celebrated the power of young people, the value of experiences beyond the classroom, and the partnerships helping the Award grow across North America.

During the visit, The Duke met Award participants, students, educators, partners and supporters, hearing first-hand how young people are building confidence, resilience, leadership and skills for the future.

The week showcased young people's achievements, the growing reach of the Award, and the power of partnerships to create opportunities for the next generation.

As Patron of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, His Royal Highness continues to champion learning beyond the classroom and the role it plays in helping young people flourish.

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🌍

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible impact teachers have on young people’s lives — helping them discover passions, build confidence, challenge themselves and grow into the people they want to become.

And at The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, teachers are a huge part of making those journeys possible.

🎓 63% of Award Centres are schools, meaning teachers make up a significant proportion of the adults supporting young people through their Award journeys.

🌍 Last year, more than 197,000 adults supported young people to take part in the Award across 135 countries and territories.

Behind every young person who takes on a new challenge, learns a new skill or discovers something they didn’t know they were capable of, there’s often an adult encouraging them to take that first step.

To all the teachers, Award Leaders and educators who give their time, encouragement and belief to young people: thank you. 💛

On the International Day of Sign Languages, we want to celebrate 2 Award participants who have been champions of inclusive communication!

Umrah from Kenya, who learned sign language to promote inclusivity and strengthen her ability to support the Deaf community, and Fatimah from Indonesia, who created an augmented reality animation to make communication more accessible.

With around 95.1 million children aged 5-19 years living with hearing loss, the importance of sign language can't be overestimated. We believe that breaking communication barriers is essential to building a more inclusive world, where every young person can participate, connect and reach their full potential. These young Award holders inspire us to keep finding ways to make the Award as flexible and inclusive as possible to ensure equal opportunity for all!

From digital transformation and the future of work, to the power of sport, education and international collaboration, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Geneva this week highlighted why Human Skills matter more than ever.

Across engagements with the President of the Swiss Confederation, ITU , UEFA , Manchester City , West Ham United , World Economic Forum , International Labour Organization , schools, senior decision-makers and supporters of the Award, the visit explored how young people can be supported to build confidence, resilience, judgement, teamwork and a sense of purpose in a rapidly changing world.

As the Award marks its 70th year, the message from Switzerland is clear: when young people are given opportunities to challenge themselves, serve their communities and discover what they are capable of, they develop skills that last a lifetime.
