What does protection for Black women and girls look like across generations?

At Protect Black Women we have been thinking about the different forms of protection needed for Black women and girls at different stages in life, from work experience and financial advice to reproductive health and wellbeing days.

What is the protection you need at this stage in your life? Feel free to comment or send us a message 🖤

Yesterday marked the International Day for the Protection of Black Women and Girls.

It exists in honour of Justice Irismay - the late mother of our co-founders Dyann Heward-Mills and Christine Fostvedt-Mills, whose life and legacy inspired this day.

On 28th May 2025 - Justice Irismay’s 80th birthday - we gathered in Accra on the grounds of the British High Commission, surrounded by some of the most formidable Black women in the world.

And we signed the PBW Accra Principles.

Seven commitments to protect Black women:

in health,
at home,
in work,
in education,
economically,
under the law,
and online.

We didn’t just mark the day.

We declared it.

Yesterday marked Year One.

The women in this image were there.

They signed.
They stood.
They showed up.

For you.

And on what would have been Justice Irismay’s 81st birthday, we are still here.

Still building.
Still protecting.
Still saying it.

Protect Black Women.

We had an absolutely AMAZING time at our first ever PBW Box & Brunch with the legendary on Sunday.

We came together as Black women and ate, spoke, boxed, stretched & breathed together, and it was truly transformative.

A massive thank you to for such beautiful facilitation, to for hosting us, and to for the delicious food as always! 😋

Watch this space for more events! 🖤

Six months has passed since Hurricane Melissa landed in Jamaica.
Sadly, we reecognise that this does not mean its devastating impacts have ended.
In response, understanding the particular responsibility that Black women take up as protectors in various ways, Protect Black Women, in partnership with , is pleased to be able to offer the second in a series of supportive gathering circles.

These circles are facilitated by Neresia Osbourne and Sheba Boakye-Duah, Protect Black Women therapists specifically trained to support Black women.

“The other day it happened. I had to tell my 9 year old, without disguise, that racist danger was in close proximity”

Protect (By) Black Women is a space on the PBW website where Black women can share their own practices, experiences, and acts of protecting Black Women and girls.

This one comes from Olumide Popoola, who recounts the painful moment she had to teach her 9 year old daughter how to recognise and survivor racist danger.

For we muddied our feet and trekked alongside our sisters to raise money for their vital work supporting women of colour during and beyond their cancer journeys 🖤

We also paid our respects at the memorial site for Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry, sisters who were tragically murdered in Fryent Country Park in 2020. Our co-founder shared some words before we reflected in silence.

A beautiful day of sisterhood, joy and shared grief, and triumph as we finished the fifth kilometre!
