Awareness starts conversations.
Research changes outcomes.

Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us why mental health matters. But lasting change also depends on research that improves understanding, treatment and care.

At MHRUK, we fund research that helps turn lived experience into evidence and evidence into better outcomes.

šŸ’™ This week, we’re celebrating the researchers, supporters and communities helping move mental health forward.

We are very grateful for a generous gift which will support schizophrenia research. This donation was made in memory of Oliver.

Bridget Barry passed away in September 2025. She kindly left a gift to MHRUK in honour of her nephew, Oliver Barry. Oliver was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2005 at the age of 22. He lived with the illness for many years and showed great strength throughout. He sadly disappeared in December 2021.

ā€œOliver was a wonderful young man who fought this terrible illness as hard as he could.ā€

Sunday is the big day! šŸƒā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’Ø
This weekend, Kieran Wagstaff is tackling the London Marathon for MHRUK, and his "why" hits close to home.
Kieran is running because he’s seen the reality of life with schizophrenia and psychosis—the complexity, the isolation, and the toll it takes on families. He’s turning that personal experience into action to ensure others get the support and scientific progress they deserve. 🧬
"Schizophrenia is still far too often misunderstood, judged, or quietly ignored," says Kieran. We’re with you every step of the way, Kieran!

We’re incredibly grateful to all of our fundraisers who go above and beyond to support our work.

A special thank you to Amy Duncan and David Paton, who have shown amazing creativity and dedication by writing an album and creating t-shirts to raise money for the cause. Efforts like this make a real difference and help us continue our work.

Give To Gain: Investing in Women, Gaining a Future šŸš€šŸ’œ

This International Women’s Day, we are proud to champion the global theme:Ā  . At MHRUK, we know that when we invest in the brilliance of female researchers, the entire mental health landscape gains.

Today, we are spotlightingĀ ourĀ pioneeringĀ female-ledĀ PhDĀ scholars. Their work isn't just about data; it’s about shifting the needle on how we understand, treat, and live with mental health conditions. By giving theseĀ womenĀ the platform to lead, we gain the breakthroughs that will define the next decade of care.

Our scholars are leading the way in: 🧬 Advanced Genetics:Ā Identifying rare risk and protective variants for schizophrenia. 🧠 Early Intervention:Ā Triangulating data to understand the root causes of eating disorders. šŸ„Ā Equity in Care:Ā Using epidemiology to tackle health and social inequalities in psychiatry. šŸ”¬Ā Precision Medicine:Ā Ending "trial and error" through pharmacogenomics. šŸ¤Ā Peer Support:Ā Centering the voices of marginalized youth in research.

When we invest in women, everyone benefits.

Mental health research doesn’t just change outcomes. It changes futures.
From early intervention to better treatments, research gives people the chance to live healthier, more connected lives. But too often, vital mental health research goes underfunded.
By donating or fundraising, you are helping researchers ask the questions that could shape care for generations to come.
