The BritishSpanish Society is a registered charity whose objectives are to promote friendship and understanding between the people of Britain and Spain through knowledge of each other’s customs, language, institutions, history and way of life. We are a non-political organisation and membership is open to anyone with an interest in Spain and its culture. We host several cultural events and activiti

es which provide our members with an opportunity to integrate and form friendships. Additionally, as a charity, we are proud to award scholarships and bursaries to British and Spanish post-graduate students every year, thanks to the generosity of our principal supporters, and in doing so we hope to encourage valuable research and learning which we believe to be beneficial for both the UK and Spain. Due to growing membership, the Society is stronger than ever, demonstrating the enduring relevance of our central mission to bring British and Spanish people together. There has never been a better time to support the BritishSpanish Society.

These people are anxiously awaiting news on whether they can still get tickets for the BritishSpanish Society Summer Party on 2 July....

The good news is, they can, the 'bad' news is, there are only 15 tickets remaining so they need to hurry before they are all sold out!

We are looking forward to an evening of true BritishSpanish friendship with beers, wines (thank you Mahou and Codorníu) and delicious canapés (thank you to Hispania and our event sponsors IE Universityy and Denia Golf Village).

Head to our website to get your ticket before they are sold out.

Here is Daisy, one of last year's winners describing how it felt to be the 2025 winner of a BritishSpanish Society scholarship award.

Daisy applied for the Scholarship Programme whilst studying for a BMus (Hons) at The Royal Academy of Music.

Winning £9,000 has enabled Daisy to accept the offer of a prestigious place at Madrid’s Reina Sofía School of Music where she will receive guidance from renowned flautists Jacques Zoon and Salvador Martínez Tos (Principal flute for the Orquesta de Valencia) whilst studying for her master’s degree in music performance.

Daisy intends to strengthen British-Spanish connections through music, by researching and performing music by lesser-known British and Spanish composers, investigating and expanding her knowledge on Spanish classical music techniques.

Daisy has an impressive musical career to date having performed at Wigmore Hall, The Royal Albert Hall and as a BBC Young Musician woodwind finalist. She has also been a regular performer at the BritishSpanish Society’s annual autumn concert.

We'll be following Daisy's progress and look forward to hearing about her future successes. If a scholarship from the BritishSpanish Society could help elevate your Music studies, you have until 26 June to apply.

Here is one of last year's winners Jaime describing how it felt to be the 2025 winner of the BBVA-BritishSpanish Society scholarship award.

Jaime applied for the Scholarship Programme whilst studying for an International Ph.D. in Law, Government and Public Policy at Autonomous University of Madrid, having previously studied Law at University of ACoruña and for Masters at both University of Valencia and London School of Economics.

As part of his research project on Improving Cross-Border Restructuring Law in Spain, the UK and the EU he conducted research stays at the Commercial Law Centre, Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford.

Winning £9,000 enabled Jaime to conduct his research stay in the UK, giving him access to leading academics in the field, their guidance and feedback and Oxford's extensive library resources. His tutors have commented that 'he will not only contribute meaningfully to legal and effective reform and cooperation between Spain and the UK, but also strengthen academic and professional ties between both countries'.

Spanish Baroque music performed by the acclaimed Lowe Ensemble in the beautiful acoustics of St Mary’s Cadogan Street. Join us for a journey through Spanish music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and its influence across Europe. From the court of Louis XIV in France, through Italy and back to the Iberian Peninsula. A rich mix of vocal and instrumental works—some newly adapted for the ensemble—highlights the dialogue between national traditions, from courtly elegance to lively dances and sacred reflection.

The Lowe Ensemble are one of the most exciting, rising Baroque groups performing today, with concerts regularly selling out. The group, consisting of siblings Joseph, Gabriel, Xavier, Santiago and Myriam, with a guest appearance from Danny Murphy at the theorbo, have a passion for bringing historically informed music to life and have recently returned home to London from their UK tour ‘Echoes of Spanish Baroque’ which featured works by Spanish composers as well as French, Italian and English composers influenced by Spanish culture and language. In 2025 the group released their debut video recording of ‘Fandango’ by Antonio Soler (1729-1783), a captivating work which bridges late Baroque and early Classical styles. In true BritishSpanish style the recording was made in London and the video shot in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. The group performed the piece with strings, harpsichord, baroque guitar and percussion.

I hope to see you there.

In his article “A Divided Spain Awaits Leo”, Jimmy Burns reflects on a Spain navigating political, cultural and generational divisions as the country prepares for Pope Leo’s historic apostolic visit.

The article explores how the Pope’s arrival comes at a moment when questions of identity, regionalism, faith and social cohesion continue shaping modern Spain. More than a religious event, the visit is presented as a test of dialogue, reconciliation and the ability to build bridges across different visions of the country.

At the British Spanish Society, we recognise the importance of cultural understanding in times of change. Through education, arts and strengthening connections between the UK and Spain, we continue celebrating the values that unite communities beyond borders and differences.

Culture remains one of the most powerful ways to foster empathy, conversation and lasting connection.
