Join Danielle Mackenzie for Elevating the value of Drama through assessment literacy on Wednesday 8th July at 5.30-6.30pm on Zoom. Based on her two-year PhD research project she led with secondary schools, involving both teachers and students from KS3 to K4, it is the first empirical study into assessment of drama ever conducted in England.
This event will present findings and discuss her PhD research, especially the concept of 'assessment literacy'. It explores how teachers and students can use assessment literacy to shape the perceived value of Drama as a subject.
Danielle Mackenzie was a Head of Drama in secondary schools for 15 years. She is a published author of Order in the Chaos, a resource book for Drama teachers.

On Sunday 31st May 5-6.30pm on Zoom, led by Rosie Devine, we will read key extracts from the GCSE set text Find Me by Olwen Wymark, coupled with examples of how to engage students through teaching and learning in role. It includes a discussion of practitioners and how to support students in drawing from a style/genre to enhance their interpretation of text and access top band marks when writing.
Find Me is a play based on a true story. The central character is a girl named Verity Taylor who suffers with mental health problems. The play studies the effects that her condition has on her family and questions the treatment she receives by the healthcare system.

Join Dr Sharon Coyne for the book launch of Theatre of the Lost and Found on Thursday 21st May at 5.30-7.30pm on Zoom. She will be talking about using drama with marginalised groups, including her work with Vita Nova and a longitudinal case study of a group of disaffected young lads.
The session will highlight the transformative effect of drama in the improvement of young people’s self-esteem, ability to engage, to work collaboratively and build resilience. It will include the opportunity to meet National Drama's International Officer who will place this book within the context and vision for how National Drama supports teachers and practitioners beyond the UK.
Dr Sharon Coyne is an applied theatre practitioner, playwright & Artistic Director of Vita Nova (a community theatre group for those in addiction recovery). She founded the organisation with a small group of recovering addicts in 1999. Vita Nova has become an established national community theatre.

On Sunday 10th May 5-6pm on Zoom join Chris Woodley as we explore his play, Next Lesson, followed by Q&A with the playwright.
Next Lesson explores the impact of Section 28 on a school community, following Michael from coming out as a teenager in 1988 to returning as a teacher. The play has been performed in London and Sydney, workshopped off-Broadway, and was shortlisted for the Polari Prize.
Chris Woodley is a screenwriter, playwright, and former drama teacher from Bromley.

Join Gill Brigg, specialist SEND teacher and trainer with more than 40 years experience, for a twilight session on Thursday 26th March 6.30-7.30pm on Zoom for SEND learners and Drama Spaces. This session will look at how the building blocks of drama teaching can be used to create irresistible learning opportunities. It will consider the barriers to engagement for SEND learners and look at a range of tried and tested examples of how to minimise these barriers.

This 1-hour session will reconnect you with the magic ingredients of using drama in your teaching. The ideas explored are applicable across all phases of education from early years to higher education settings . It will also offer suggestions of how to minimise your stress whilst teaching!

Session fee is £7.50. Members of London Drama and National Drama £5.00. Teachers-in-Training/ECTs £2.

London Drama Free Online Book Clubs take place on Sundays 5-6pm and are free (but we welcome donations!) Each one introduces a play that is enjoyable to read and explore and also may provide you with useful material for classroom use.
On Sunday 9th November 5-6pm we will be joined by Jaz Tizzard for an honest, thought-provoking look at Apricot by Gigi Rice, a powerful play about friendship, choice, and teenage experiences. With live readings, personal insights, and reflections from the Edinburgh Fringe, this event offers an engaging mix of performance and discussion that challenges and inspires audiences. Apricot is a play about two teenage girls facing the realities of abortion.
