Conciliation Resources

Conciliation Resources We are committed to stopping violent conflict and creating more peaceful societies. We make peace possible.

We work with people impacted by war and violence, bringing diverse voices together to make change that lasts. We connect the views of people on the ground with political processes, and share experience and expertise so others can find creative responses to conflict.

Achieving lasting peace requires making sure that those most affected by conflict have a seat at the table. In the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, where communities are navigating the long-term implementation of the Asmara Peace Agreement, women have historically been left out of formal political consultations and reconciliation processes.

To change this dynamic, the Sirad Institute For Research and Development (SIRAD) and the Ugaaso Women Dialogue Space Organization brought together women leaders from different political factions, including the Ogaden National Liberation Front and the Prosperity Party. Together, these leaders rejected political hostility, shared strategies for inclusive representation, and successfully advocated for women to be appointed to key party leadership positions and parliamentary candidacies.

This work was supported by the UN Women's Peace and Humanitarian Fund under the Rapid Response Window.

During an Ebola crisis, stigmatisation and tensions with survivors and frontline workers can remain high and are driven by complex factors beyond the fear of infection. This can include blaming survivors for local hardships, holding frontline workers responsible for disrupting cultural burial traditions, and a widespread perception that targeted post-Ebola aid packages are being unfairly monopolised by specific beneficiary groups.

Where crises occur in contexts of prolonged and brutal conflict, the vast majority of the population are already significantly traumatised by conflict, and their resilience to this new stress is much weaker. This leads to widespread retraumatisation and severe mental health consequences in impacted communities.

What lessons can we learn from past outbreaks to help ensure pathways to peace are maintained during such critical emergencies? Below are links to resources we produced during previous crises, which we hope will be useful for anyone interested in conflict-sensitive responses to health crises.

Have you listened to the first season of our podcast, Peace in Action, yet?

Across six episode, our Executive Director Jonathan Cohen speaks with practitioners, mediators, community leaders and researchers who have worked in contexts where we have been active over the past three decades: the Line of Control between India and Pakistan, Mindanao in the Philippines, northeast Nigeria and the Central African Republic, Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State, and Northern Ireland.

What emerges across these conversations is less a single argument than a set of recurring questions. What does it take to keep a peace process alive over years — or decades? Whose voices are essential, and who tends to be left out? When is an agreement the beginning of something, and when does it mark the end of momentum? How do communities begin to address what happened to them once the violence stops?

The season also includes a conversation about out Accord publication series. Its origins, its reach, and what three decades of documenting peace processes suggests about what the field has learned, and what gaps remain.

The full season is now available, with transcripts available for each episode:

For decades, women in Liberia have led the way in advocating for justice and peace following two devastating civil wars. When the government took steps to establish an office for the new War and Economic Crimes Court, local organisations stepped in to ensure that women’s voices and priorities shape how justice is delivered.

With support from the UN Women Peace and Humanitarian Fund under the Rapid Response Window, Integrity Watch Liberia and the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) worked closely with officials to design a framework for the new court that directly addresses the severe impacts of wartime sexual and gender-based violence.

By organising public campaigns and community education sessions across seven counties, they helped over ten thousand people better understand the court's purpose and countered misperceptions regarding witness protection and regional stability.

is inherently an emotional and psychological journey, yet many practitoners find themselves navigating high-pressure conflict environments without adequate psychological training or support.

This report we produced - "Equipping minds, managing emotions"- authored by Prof. Dr. Irene Bruna Bruna Seu highlights how the lack of psychological scaffolding impacts both the wellbeing of peacebuilders and the effectiveness of their interventions.

The report identifies a need for multi-level psychosocial support, ranging from preparatory briefings to specialised individual and team care, as well as psychological upskilling for practitioners. The findings also emphasise the role of donors and senior management in fostering a culture that normalises and caters for the psychological aspects of peacebuilding.

How can we better understand the diverse roles that people of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression play in building and sustaining peace?

We believe everyone affected by violent conflict has the right to shape peace, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Our research shows that inclusive peace processes are more resilient, yet the realities for people of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression vary drastically across the contexts where we work. Decisions made by people in peace processes can have positive and negative impacts on these groups.

In some societies, gender and sexual minorities hold deep historical and cultural roots that were often disrupted by colonial structures. In others, they face severe stigmatisation and exclusion. Because legal and social realities differ so significantly, it is important to work with people with deep knowledge of their contexts to navigate the specific needs, risks, and roles of individuals and these communities.

This hashtag month, we are reflecting on the experience and role of people with diverse gender identity and sexual orientation in shaping more inclusive paths to peace.

In the town of Kaga Bandoro, Central African Republic, young people have been meeting to discuss ways of tackling conflict in their communities. One of the main causes of conflict is around the limited number of water pumps, often serving several thousand people at once. During a recent workshop facilitated by our local partner Catdec Coopération d’Appui Technique au Developpement Communautaire, two groups of young people presented their plans for tackling these conflict triggers to local authorities. This project is funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
