Campaign for Gigi update📢💛

The Government and Ofsted have committed to stronger safer sleep protections in every nursery. From September 2026, safer sleep will now be assessed at every Ofsted inspection of early years settings, a direct achievement of the Campaign for Gigi.

Ofsted's updated Early Years Inspection Toolkit now sets out clearer expectations around safer sleep, particularly for babies and children under two.

Gigi’s legacy is protecting babies and young children for years to come.

Thank you to everyone in our community who has shared our posts, written to their MP, and read our guidance. Your support has resulted in changes that can save babies’ lives.

Today, the Campaign for Gigi reached another milestone for baby safety in Gigi’s name 📢.

The Government has confirmed that Ofsted will now assess safer sleep arrangements at every inspection of every early years setting in England.

Sir Martyn Oliver, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector at Ofsted, wrote to Gigi’s parents, Katie and John, to confirm that Ofsted's updated Early Years Inspection Toolkit now sets out clearer expectations around safer sleep.

Every baby and young child deserves to sleep as safely as possible in every childcare setting, and the government is taking a vital step towards making this a reality.

Some parents find using a baby breathing monitor reassuring, as it can give them peace of mind while their baby is sleeping nearby.

This can be especially true for families who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a baby, which is why Snuza donates 250 baby breathing monitors every year to support families on our Care of Next Infant (CONI) programme.

The Snuza HeroMD is a portable breathing monitor that clips directly onto a baby’s nappy, which means it can offer parents reassurance in a range of sleep settings, whether that’s a daytime nap in a moses basket or an overnight sleep in their cot.

But if you are thinking about using a portable breathing monitor, it is important to understand how it works and where it works best, and the situations where it may give you false reassurance about your baby’s breathing.

Content note: baby loss.

A severe shortage of paediatric and perinatal pathologists is causing long, distressing delays for families awaiting post-mortem results. These services are essential for determining why a baby or child has died. Grieving families should receive the answers they deserve, quickly.

As a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss, The Lullaby Trust and other charities will keep working to ensure this issue remains firmly on the political agenda. We're calling for urgent investment to rebuild the paediatric and perinatal pathology workforce.

A shortage of pathologists means families can wait months for post-mortem examination results.

We’ve funded the research and developed the life-saving advice. So you can focus on the most important thing – spending quality time with your little one.

Our safer sleep guidance and infection prevention advice has saved almost 32,000 babies’ lives, and is based on decades of cutting-edge research.

Parents are busy, and few have time to trawl through scientific reports. That’s why we’ve packaged it all up for you into simple, clear and concise guidance.

But this guidance only saves lives when it reaches those who need it. Please share this post, and tag parents and carers, to help us put our life-saving advice in front of those looking after little ones.

PS – Just because we’ve done so much research already, definitely doesn’t mean we will stop there. We are constantly funding new research, and we won’t stop until no baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly.

Clear cot, clear mind 🧘

To reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), keep your baby’s cot clear of any items that could cover your baby's face and head. Such as bumpers, toys, duvets, pillows and loose bedding.

Babies need just two items in their cot:

- A firm, flat, waterproof mattress.

- Lightweight bedding.

When in doubt, the answer is clear.
