Last weekend, to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary we made a short visit to Mumbai to visit the projects we support through our family charity

More than 15 years ago I had the privilege of participating in a Channel 4 Documentary that introduced me to NGOs that I fell in love with.

Bina Lashkari of and Shweta Chari of took my breath away with their vision for ensuring children of migrant workers or remote/challenged communities could access education in a fun and accessible way.

I pledged that I would raise £1mill for programmes that help such kids in my lifetime and I’m excited to say that, 16 years on, we are 3/4 of the way there already thanks to the incredible support of so many friends, well wishers and our family.

Special special thanks to my husband Sanjay Sharma, Anita Goyal and Avnish Goyal of the Hemraj Goyal Foundation and my childhood friend from the International School of Lusaka Zambia David M , all of whom have donated quietly and RELENTLESSLY for YEARS to bring this vision to life.

A huge thank you to our family’s children Anushka Sharma, Shivani Sharma, Nikhil Bahal and Esha Bahal who are our youth ambassadors and have hosted charity fashion shows and other fundraisers. They have discovered that the joy that comes from helping others is like no other.

May you go from strength to strength Bina and Shweta! Celebrating your work was the best pearl anniversary celebration we could have asked for. 🎉

As our lockdown is extended here in the UK, we have not forgotten the poorest of the poor, and our hearts are breaking for all the families who earn a daily wage to put an evening meal on their table for their family.

A great accolade for our NGO partner

Today, Apnalaya was awarded the certificate of Merit for Healthcare Services from the Former Minister of State for Health of Uganda, Sarah Opendi at the World Health & Wellness Congress event in Mumbai. The Congress aims at recognizing leaders who have contributed value to the profession or their organisation and make a difference.

There is nothing quite like a face to face chat!

What a treat to spend a whole afternoon talking to Annabel Mehta about the pioneering work being done by our NGO partner in the dumping grounds at Shivaji Nagar, where over 600K have settled on a rubbish dump.

Over the years we have supported various initiatives and pilots within Apnalaya’s holistic integrated community development framework.

The Challenger programme for disabled kids, the early identification programme for pregnant mums at risk, and recently the School Saheli peer support programme to keep teenage girls in school, have all been pioneering initiatives.

We are so proud to see the outcomes and the expansion of these enabling programmes.

Apnalaya President Annabel Mehta was happy to meet with long term donor from London, Seema Sharma this week. Seema has supported us for over ten years through her charity Child Action. Thank you, Seema! We look forward to your continuing interest and support for the next ten years.

When your NGO partner of 11 years is spotted by the President of India! 👏👏👏

Our New Year began with great honour as we received an invite by the Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovindji on the 3rd of January, 2020. He commended our contribution for promoting education among socially and economically disadvantaged children. He also congratulated us on our grassroot level work and motivated us to continue on the path of change making. Highly grateful to President of India Rashtrapati Bhavan राष्ट्रपति भवन for this opportunity.
