Nathan Amaral and Jonathan Ware performing Francisco Mignone's Valsa De Esquina No.2 at Wigmore Hall.

Nathan will appear at Snape Maltings, Suffolk, tomorrow as part of their Classically Black Weekend. His performance will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as 'Friday Night Is Music Night' on Friday 16th October!

For his YCAT Final Audition, cellist Willard Carter () chose music that reflected the year leading up to it. It was a period of returning home, reconnecting with family, asking for help and reflecting on the people who had shown up for him.

Here, he shares the story behind that programme, and why each piece came from a place of “pure honesty”. 🎻

Willard Carter performs the Prelude from Purcell’s Suite in G minor, Z. 661 - a brief, plaintive keyboard miniature stripped back to a simple, expressive line on solo cello.

Willard, a former Rising Star, is currently studying at with Antje Weithaas. His 2026/27 season includes a return to , debuts at the Birmingham and , and performances at the Nicolaihaus and Piano Salon Christophori in Berlin.

We recently sat down with cellist Willard Carter, one of our newest YCAT artists, to hear more about his journey into music and the kind of artist he hopes to become.

From first discovering the cello as a child to finding his own artistic voice, Willard spoke about the importance of storytelling in his music, and his belief in its power to connect, communicate and bring people together.

It was a lovely opportunity to get to know Willard at the beginning of his time with YCAT – and to hear what he’s looking forward to in the years ahead.
