HISTORY WALK – Ratcliffe Sailor Town
Explore the banks of the River Thames to discover the origins of Britain's maritime adventure which made London the centre of worldwide trade.
Five hundred years ago, Britain was not a maritime nation. Spain and Portugal ruled the waves, In 1533, the first English explorers left Ratcliffe to seek the North-East passage to China. From these small beginnings grew the mighty East India Company. Britain’s imperial expansion made London and its docks the hub of a global empire.
On this walk, from Shadwell to Limehouse, our experienced guide will point out places of interest and explain some of its hidden history. The walk takes 90 minutes or so and ends at a riverside pub dating from 1588. Tickets from Eventbrite through this link:
