Today, we join the ILO and communities worldwide in celebrating the essential role of care and support in building resilient, gender-responsive societies. At One to One, we see firsthand how investing in local women as community health workers - our Mentor Mothers - brings life-saving care to South Africa’s most underserved areas.

Our Mentor Mothers work at the heart of the “care economy,” providing critical healthcare and support to vulnerable mothers and children, while challenging gender norms and expanding opportunities for women in the workforce.

Let’s recognize and support care work as essential to our shared future. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive society that values care and empowers those who provide it.

Today, on International Day of Rural Women, we recognize the pivotal role that rural women play in sustaining and developing their communities. At One to One, we see firsthand how these women are not just caregivers, but also leaders, health workers, educators, and entrepreneurs. Through programs like Mentor Mothers, we support rural women as they navigate and address the toughest challenges facing their families and villages—from accessing healthcare in remote areas to creating sustainable livelihoods.

These women are the heartbeat of community resilience. By empowering rural women, we’re unlocking the potential for real, lasting change.

At One to One, we have been studying and addressing the relationship between child health and nutrition for almost a decade.

Despite widespread poverty and malnutrition, we’ve enabled 81% of children under our care to receive child support grants. Through partnerships, we directly combat malnutrition, having already provided over 11,000 clients with nutritional support, enhancing their children’s futures. Amongst babies born underweight in our programme, we have a 90% rehabilitation rate.

Friday 1 March marked UNAIDS’ Zero Discrimination Day, and this year’s theme was “To protect everyone’s health, protect everyone’s rights”.

Discrimination and stigmatisation based on HIV status continues to be a major barrier to people, especially women, accessing life-saving antiretroviral treatment. That is why our Mentor Mothers work tirelessly to educate their clients on the benefits of HIV testing, treatment and disclosure through a peer-to-peer, rights-based healthcare model.

Follow One to One’s journey as we empower communities in order to promote the right to health and brighter futures for all.
