On the 150th Anniversary of Vadym Shcherbakivskyi
March 17 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the distinguished Ukrainian scholar - archaeologist, ethnographer and art historian Vadym Mykhailovych Shcherbakivskyi (March 17, 1876, Shpychyntsi village, Kyiv region - January 18, 1957, England).
From the 1910s onwards, he carried out dozens of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions across Ukraine. He investigated numerous burial mounds dating to the Bronze Age, the Scythian period and the Old Rus era, and assembled a collection of nearly 10,000 museum artifacts. He devoted considerable attention to the study of vernacular architecture and folk art of the Dnipro region, collecting and documenting their finest examples.
In the 1940s, Shcherbakivskyi was actively engaged in the academic institutions of the Ukrainian émigré community. He was a member of the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Munich, a full member and head of the archaeological department of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (UVAN) and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Europe, and served as the first post-war rector of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich.
In 1951, at the invitation of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), the scholar moved to England, where he continued his academic and community activities. He wrote scholarly articles, delivered lectures, published in periodicals, and served as deputy to Danylo Skoropadskyi on the Relief Board for Ukrainian Students.
Vadym Shcherbakivskyi’s archival legacy is now dispersed across several countries. A substantial portion of his documents - personal belongings, correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and other materials - is preserved in the Shevchenko Library and Archive in London. To mark the 80th anniversary of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain and the 150th anniversary of the scholar’s birth, a major undertaking has been completed: the preparation for publication of a comprehensive corpus of his archival materials, preserved by the AUGB for over seven decades.

AUGB Chair Petro Rewko and Board member Iryna Terlecky were pleased to have been invited to meet Mike Tapp MP, Home Office Minister for Migration and Citizenship.

We thanked the government for the additional two year extension to temporary sanctuary offered to displaced Ukrainians and the change to allow a 90-day application period.

We discussed a number of issues relating to the longer term, in the light of continuing Russian aggression, with no clear path towards a just and sustainable peace, and the contribution that displaced Ukrainians are already making to their communities and the UK economy. In particular, we highlighted the need for early policy development on leave to remain, a clear intergovernmental strategy that would allow displaced Ukrainians to make an informed choice about their future, and the need to support Ukrainian supplementary schools to ensure that children maintained connection to their language and heritage, including formal accreditation of Ukrainian language learning.

The Minister understood and was sympathetic to the points we raised. He undertook to continue the dialogue with AUGB and we look forward to arranging a visit to one of our branches so that he can meet our community members.

AUGB has been a trusted partner of government from the start of development of the Homes for Ukraine scheme and we will continue to engage constructively to ensure that the voice of our community is heard.

AUGB Condemns Decision Allowing Russia and Belarus to Compete Under National Flags at Milano-Cortina 2026

As the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games begin, the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) reiterates its condemnation of the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to permit athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to compete under their national flags and with their national anthems.
Russia continues to wage a brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, with Belarus acting as a key enabler of that invasion. In this context, restoring national representation to the aggressor states at the Paralympic Games is indefensible and inconsistent with the values of dignity, justice and humanity that the Paralympic Movement seeks to uphold.
In recent weeks the AUGB has written separately to the International Paralympic Committee and to the British Paralympic Association setting out our objections to this decision and urging careful consideration of the profound symbolic implications of allowing the flags and symbols of the aggressor states to be displayed at the Opening Ceremony.
For Ukrainians, those symbols are not abstract. They represent the continuing invasion of Ukraine and the very real immeasurable human suffering that it has caused, including life-changing injuries to civilians and members of Ukraine’s sporting community.
This is underlined by the countries who, as a result of the IPC’s decision, will not be taking part in the Opening Ceremony. We are grateful that these countries understand that the IPC’s decision is fundamentally wrong and continue to support the Ukrainian people against an illegal invasion.
We stand firmly in solidarity with Ukraine and with all those who believe that international sport must not provide a platform for the normalisation of aggression.

Dear members of the Ukrainian Community and friends of Ukraine. Thank you all for your likes and kind messages of congratulations on my award from President Zelensky. It really was a shock which I knew nothing about.

What I will say is that this award is for all of us in AUGB and the whole Ukrainian Community in the UK. For those who came before us and for those who are the present custodians of an Organisation which has a 80 year history of representing and supporting Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian decent here in the UK and helping and promoting Ukraine of which I have the honour and pleasure of being the current Chair.

Without the support, dedication and commitment of yourselves and many other volunteers our organisation would not have achieved and continue to achieve such recognition.

With thanks and respect to you all.

Petro Rewko. AUGB Chair.

Statement
On the Fourth Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
Four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, one fact is beyond dispute: Russia’s aggression continues.
Calls for “negotiations” that pressure Ukraine to concede territory do not advance peace — they reward invasion. Proposals that freeze the front line without justice do not create peace — they entrench instability. Every moment of strategic hesitation costs Ukrainian lives and deepens the humanitarian toll on innocent civilians. Authoritarian regimes are watching how the democratic world responds. If it signals that borders can be changed by force, that war crimes can go unpunished, and that endurance alone can outlast Western resolve, the consequences will extend far beyond Ukraine.
The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advocating for:

• Sustained and strengthened UK military, financial and humanitarian support – for Ukraine to be equipped to win, not merely to survive;
• The defence of Ukraine’s full territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders;
• The use of frozen Russian state assets to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction;
• The acceleration of accountability mechanisms to prosecute war crimes and the crime of aggression;
• The return of unlawfully deported Ukrainian children and prisoners of war;
• Support for Ukraine being measured in years, not news cycles.
Fatigue must not replace resolve. Peace without justice is not peace — it is deferred conflict.
Ukraine’s resistance is a fight for its existence, for peace and stability in Europe and for defence of international law.
We call on the Government of the United Kingdom, parliamentarians across all parties and the international community to maintain unity and leadership at this critical moment. The cost of supporting Ukraine is far less than the cost of allowing aggression to succeed.

For four years Ukraine has stood firm. For four years, the British people and our community have mobilised — raising funds, delivering aid, supporting displaced families and advocating tirelessly across British society.

We will continue, we will not waver! We stand with Ukraine now and always!

Eternal memory to the fallen heroes!
Glory to Ukraine -
