We recently announced the four committed supporters who will be running the TCS London Marathon in aid of Construction Youth Trust on Sunday 26th April! 🏃🏾🏃🏽‍🏃🏾🏃🏽‍

Now we’d like to let you know a little more about each of them.

First up, Anthony. One of our valued Trustees, he took up running in lockdown and got a taste for it. His enthusiasm was catching and soon he was being joined by members of his family.

Roll on five years and he’s taken part in several park runs and two half-marathons, but never a full marathon. This is a challenge he’s tackling head-on with a strict training and diet regime. He’s now growing in confidence and has set his sights on coming in under five hours.

Go Anthony, you’ve got this!

With just over 11 weeks to go we can’t wait to see how he does on the day.

We’re excited to announce the four committed supporters who will be running the TCS London Marathon in aid of Construction Youth Trust on Sunday 26th April!🏃🏾🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏾🏃🏽‍♂️

Meet Anthony, Dan, Lee and Tim – our CYT marathon heroes! None have run the London Marathon before but all are committed to the training required and are passionate about fundraising to support the next generation into inspiring careers in construction and the built environment.

🏆Lee – keen to address the industry’s skills gap and support young people through CYT
🏁Tim – excited to support CYT while working towards a healthy goal

With just over 15 weeks to go, they have their work cut out for them, so please offer your support by giving generously. You can access their fundraising pages and offer messages of support here.

We’ll be following their progress and giving updates over the coming weeks. And we’ll be setting up a cheer point so we can give them all the support and encouragement they need on the day!

🏌️‍ Driving change together: Our partnership with Dornan hits new heights at Charity Golf Day ⛳

In the same week that Katarina - a young person supported by CYT - began her apprenticeship with Dornan Engineering, we were thrilled to join as them as charity partner for their second annual Golf Day!

It was a glorious day enjoyed by golfers at all levels. A highlight for us was the golfing clinic for beginners, which gave us a great opportunity to connect with members of the Dornan team we hadn’t previously met, reinforcing our partnership. 🌟

We had a lot of fun handing out Mulligans, with all proceeds going to support our work in local communities and were delighted by the success of the prize raffle. A huge thank you to our friends at Dornan for donating such fantastic prizes, and to everyone who bought a ticket on the day. 🎁

It’s an honour to partner with a company so closely aligned with our goal of supporting less advantaged young people into the industry and to thrive in their careers.

Katerina's Story: how she turned her creativity into a career! 💡

At 18, Katerina felt drawn to a career in architecture but only had an outline knowledge of the role and thought university was the only way into the profession. By working closely with her CYT coach, she explored a range of careers in construction, including design engineering and Building Information Modelling (BIM). She met relatable role models, went on site visits and insight days and completed work experience. She built her confidence and found herself drawn to more collaborative roles in construction – roles she hadn’t previously been aware of.

We’re delighted to announce that Katerina has, this week, started a BIM apprenticeship with Dornan Engineering - the first big step in her exciting career! 🙌

James' story: getting back on track with his career goals 👏

At 19, James from Lewisham was struggling to find an apprenticeship after college - until he joined our Building Opportunities programme. With support from his coach, he built confidence, earned his CSCS card and Health & Safety qualification, and developed a strong CV and interview skills.

A plumbing work placement gave him the hands-on experience he needed and confirmed his career path. Just a few months later, James landed a Level 3 plumbing apprenticeship with Joe Brennan Training - and he’s now thriving in the role!

🥇 CWCF Making Waves for Charity! 🛶

We’re proud to be long-standing partners of Canary Wharf Contractors Fund (CWCF), who support us with incredible fundraising throughout the year. Their latest event – the annual Dragon Boat Race at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre – was another huge success!

Thirty teams took part, including (for the first time ever!) a crew made up of representatives from all 10 supported charities – including us! We were thrilled to be involved and see such fantastic community spirit in action.

Discovering the World of Work with Places for London and their Joint Venture Partners🔍🏗️

Last month, we teamed up with Places for London to deliver 20 work experience placements as part of their Educational Engagement Programme (EEP), hosted by themselves and Joint Development Partners - Barratt London, Earls Court Development Company (ECDC) and Grainger Plc.

Students were immersed in a range of exciting activities including shadowing different industry professionals in workplace settings, visiting a range of construction sites, presenting to senior managers and more!

Places for London, supported by their engineering team led by Heather Cotton launched their first sector-specific work experience opportunity giving young people a hands-on insight into the role of an engineer.

💬"The activities and sessions greatly improved my engineering knowledge and helped me develop key social skills such as thinking about what I can do in an interview or networking event to best present myself!" – Mohammad, young person on placement.

A massive thank you to Places for London, Barratt London, ECDC and Grainger Plc for hosting our young people at your organisations - it was a truly insightful experience for them to gain a wider understanding of working in the industry, and how they can kickstart their careers in the sector.

Budding Bricklayers gain hands-on experience with GSQ Brickwork! 🧱

As part of our Building Opportunities programme, 10 young people (aged 15–16) from Barking & Dagenham joined us at the BRIC training centre for an action-packed day with GSQ Brickwork.

The students rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into the world of bricklaying - each building part of their own training wall and even tackling some brick-themed maths challenges! 🧠

They also had the chance to chat with the team at GSQ, gaining valuable insight into the wide range of careers in the construction industry.

A huge thank you to GSQ Brickwork and Clare Coombe (Barking Riverside) for hosting and running the session, and to Barking and Dagenham Council for coming along to see the young people in action.

What a brilliant way to inspire the next generation and give them a real taste of the industry! 🙌
