Home-Start Richmond, Kingston & Hounslow We are here to give a supportive start to struggling families with children under the age of 5

We support families in the boroughs of Richmond upon Thames, Kingston upon Thames and Hounslow with at least one child under the age of five, through our dedicated volunteers and we also offer support to families through term-time weekly online Family groups. Our co-ordinators are responsible for the day-to-day recruitment, training and support of the volunteers as well as liaising with referrers. Our charity is supported by a Board of Trustee, who oversee our activities, providing strategic, funding and governance advice.

Homes matter.

Practical support matters.

But families told us something else matters too.

They don't just need a better home.

They need someone alongside them.

Someone they trust.

As one parent supported by Home-Start explained:

“I felt seen and cared for during the most difficult times of my life. Their support meant a lot to me. I was in a very dark place, and they made me see a ray of light.”

Home-Start volunteers visit families in their own homes and communities.

They build relationships over time.

They listen without judgement.

They help parents navigate challenges, access support and rebuild confidence.

Because when families feel supported, children thrive.

Trusted relationships change outcomes.

Too many parents in London are forced to make impossible choices every day.

For families struggling with housing insecurity, the pressure doesn’t stop at the front door.

Almost one in three families supported by Home-Start meet the technical definition of destitution.

This is a shocking term. But families involved in the research told us it was important not to soften the language, because doing so risks hiding the severity of what families are experiencing.

As one parent put it:
“If we want to make an impact, we have to say what it is we are really experiencing. It makes people feel uncomfortable but there needs to be more awareness of the realities of families’ lives”

Destitution means being unable to afford the absolute basics to stay warm, dry, clean and fed.

Families told us they’ve had to:

• Skip meals
• Turn off the heating despite needing it
• Ration nappies and formula
• Rely on food and baby banks
• Go without basic essentials

When so much of a family’s energy is spent trying to keep a roof over their heads and make ends meet, there is little left for anything else.

This is the reality behind the numbers.

Home-Start is there to help families – because they shouldn’t have to navigate these challenges alone.

We’re looking for an Impact and Operations Manager to join our team.

You’ll play a key role in keeping our charity running smoothly, making sure our team has the tools, systems and support they need. You’ll also lead on reporting to funders and partners, helping us communicate the impact of our work with local families.

You’ll:
• Lead impact evaluation and champion the voices of children and families, using data and storytelling to demonstrate real-life impact.
• Oversee operational policies, systems and the operations budget.
• Line-manage our Operations Team and contribute to strategic planning as part of our Senior Management Team.

This is a strategic and hands-on role. If you have experience in operations management, service evaluation and data analysis, and bring a collaborative, practical approach, we’d love to hear from you. 💜

Behind every statistic is a family. And behind this research are the voices of parents themselves.

Home-Start London’s latest research puts the experiences of parents at the heart of the conversation. Co-designed with parents with lived experience, it reflects what families themselves told us about raising babies and young children in London today.

As one of the Family Champions put it: “I want people to understand how complex housing needs are, to process how much of an effect it is having on the daily life of families.”

Childhood begins at home.

Yet for too many families across London, home is not a place of safety and opportunity. Instead, it can be a constant source of stress, instability and poor health.

As one parent told us: “It’s about having space for him to grow.”

Next week, Home-Start London will share new insights from families supported by Home-Start services across London, including families supported by Home-Start Richmond, Kingston & Hounslow, exploring what the housing crisis really means for parents, babies and young children.

Because a home is more than four walls. It shapes childhood. Every child deserves a safe place to grow up.

Last week, our Family Support Team and a wonderful group of volunteers headed over to Kingston for some training on Understanding Coercive and Controlling Behaviour.

It was a thought-provoking and insightful session, giving us valuable space to deepen our understanding of coercive control, reflect on how it can impact individuals and families, and consider how we can continue to strengthen the support we offer to those who may be experiencing it.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect, share learning and build relationships with colleagues across the Kingston borough 💜

A huge thank you to Kingston Council for providing this important training, and to the brilliant Bushra Akhtar, VAWG Officer, for delivering such an engaging and thought-provoking session.
