Myeloma is one of the hardest blood cancers to treat. That's why Dr Nick Crump is working to change that.

Dr Crump's research is helping us better understand myeloma and could contribute to the development of more effective treatments in the future.

This Myeloma Awareness Week, we're shining a light on the vital work he's doing to improve outcomes for people affected by blood cancer.

Research like this is only possible thanks to your support, our blood cancer community ❤️

“Nobody talks about how difficult it is to tell people you’ve got cancer.”

Sophie was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in 2023 during her fourth year of university. She explains how one of the hardest parts of coming to terms with everything was telling her friends and family she had blood cancer.

In last night's episode of EastEnders, we saw Denise face that same struggle as she tried to tell her loved ones.

If you've had to share the same life-changing news, what helped you have that conversation? 💬

Share Sophie's story to help others feel less alone.

When Dr Lucy Goudswaard’s mum was diagnosed with myeloma, it changed the course of their lives. Inspired by her family’s experience, Lucy went on to become a blood cancer researcher.

She’s working to advance our understanding of what causes people to develop myeloma. Her research focuses on people with a blood condition called MGUS, studying proteins in the blood and lifestyle factors to better understand why some people go on to develop myeloma while others do not.

Driven by her mum’s diagnosis, Lucy is determined to make a difference for people affected by myeloma, so other families don't have to experience the same.

Lucy is one of our newest research fellows, and we’ll be sharing more about her research soon...

We are delighted to hear that our Chair of Trustees, Matthew Wilson, has been awarded an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours.

Matthew has been a passionate advocate for people affected by blood cancer since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2021. After treatment, he established the Matthew Wilson Multiple Myeloma Fund with Blood Cancer UK, helping to drive vital research into better treatments for the disease. Since its launch, the fund has raised millions of pounds to support groundbreaking myeloma research.

As Chair of Trustees, Matthew brings not only exceptional leadership experience, but also a personal understanding of the impact blood cancer can have on individuals and families. His commitment to improving outcomes for everyone affected by blood cancer continues to inspire us every day.

Congratulations, Matthew, on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for everything you do for our blood cancer community.

📺 Following Denise's recent storyline on EastEnders, our nurse, Gemma, and ambassador, Mphango, appeared on BBC London News last night.

Mphango shared her personal experience of being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and the challenges she faced. Gemma spoke about how our work with EastEnders is helping to raise awareness of blood cancer, encouraging people to recognise the signs and symptoms, understand that it is the UK's third biggest cancer killer, and highlighting the support available to those affected.

We're incredibly proud of them both for helping to raise awareness of blood cancer and for representing Blood Cancer UK and the people affected by it so powerfully ❤️

You may recall that we, along with Anthony Nolan and Lymphoma Action, submitted a joint appeal to NICE to reconsider the removal of Tecartus as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma for the NHS.

‼️ Today, NICE announces it will reconsider its decision.

We’re pleased they will be reconsidering, and we'll continue to advocate for access to this treatment on behalf of people affected.

Tecartus is the only CAR T-cell therapy available for people with relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma, and can be a potentially life-saving option for people when other treatments have stopped working.

We hope this reconsideration from NICE ensures the realities facing people with rare blood cancers and very limited treatment options are fully reflected in the final decision ❤️

📺 In tonight’s episode of EastEnders, Denise receives a call from her doctor reminding her to return to the hospital ASAP for a blood and platelet transfusion.

As Denise’s AML cells build up, they crowd out the bone marrow, which stops her from producing the normal blood cells she needs. Blood and platelet transfusions can relieve fatigue and prevent bruising and bleeding, this keeps her as well as possible before starting her treatment.

Treatment for AML often begins quite quickly after diagnosis because it’s a fast-growing blood cancer that needs urgent treatment to get the leukaemia under control. After this, treatment continues for several months and requires time in hospital.

It’s understandable that Denise may feel nervous about returning to hospital; she's being asked to face urgent treatment before she's had any time to process her diagnosis, a reality many with blood cancer go through ❤️

What Is Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)?

In tonight’s episode of EastEnders, Denise's acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) diagnosis continues to play out.

Being diagnosed with blood cancer can bring a huge range of emotions. For some people, it's shock, fear or disbelief. Others may focus on practical questions, feel numb, or struggle to process what's happening at all.

There's no 'right' way to react. Everyone's experience is unique, and no two diagnoses, conversations, or journeys will be exactly the same.

Marie, who was also diagnosed with AML told us:

"I felt just complete shock at the diagnosis. I think we often go through life thinking we're invincible and that the things that happen to other people will never happen to us. I felt like I was watching a movie and that this was all happening to someone else.

I think I buried my head in the sand at first. I wanted to be strong for my family and in my head, I just thought I had something like the flu.
The reality hadn’t yet hit home and all I was focusing on was how it was going to be treated. I wanted to know the practical side of getting from A (being poorly) to B (being well).

I didn’t want to read anything about AML in the first few days. I hadn’t really registered what I was going through. It probably took several weeks to sink in and for me to process what was happening."

If you've been affected by blood cancer, or you're supporting someone who has, we're here for you. Whether you want information, emotional support, or simply someone to talk to, you don't have to face it alone.
