Happy World Sea Turtle Day 🐢

To celebrate, we have exciting news from Loango Bay Community Marine Reserve.

Local partner Renatura reported that the reserve’s monitoring teams have released 1,114 sea turtles caught in fishing nets

Thanks to the support of our donors, Rainforest Trust helped establish the Loango Bay Community Marine Reserve off Congo’s Atlantic coast, protecting 123,602 acres of vital marine habitat from commercial fishing and oil and gas development.

Green Turtles and Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtles are among the many marine species that rely on Loango Bay for food, shelter, and refuge from the open ocean. 🌊

By regulating fishing operations in the bay, the reserve protects one of only two documented foraging grounds for sea turtles on Central Africa’s mainland coast.

Conservation like this gives vulnerable species a fighting chance and, in the case of Green Turtles, collective efforts are paying off.

Last year, global populations had increased enough to take the Green Turtle off the Endangered Species list. Protected areas like the Loango Bay Community Marine Reserve are critical to sustaining this success.

Awareness and pride for this coastal sanctuary and its biodiversity brought together conservationists, scientists, fishermen, and communities to ensure long-term protection for the area’s irreplaceable marine life, including sea turtles. 💚

From all of us at Rainforest Trust UK, thank you for your commitment to conservation!

The tropical coasts of Bangladesh support richly diverse marine wildlife, including the Vulnerable Olive Ridley Turtle. Like all sea turtle species, females travel great distances to return to the beach where they hatched to lay their own eggs.

Unsustainable fishing practices can entangle marine megafauna, including sea turtles. Many sites are intensively over-fished, which disrupts the food web in the waters where sea turtles grow and migrate.

To secure safe havens for aquatic wildlife in the Bay of Bengal, Rainforest Trust is supporting the creation of Marine Protected Areas of over 2,461,608 acres. These areas enforce fishing exclusion zones while protecting inshore habitats, coasts, and submarine canyons.

For a migratory bird to survive, every stop along their journey must be safe.

The East Atlantic Flyway stretches from the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Africa, and its coastal habitats face intense pressure. 🌍

Development, pollution, and overfishing are destroying critical stopover sites where birds rest, feed, and build strength for seasonal migrations.

On World Migratory Bird Day, you can help save a critical resting site on the East Atlantic Flyway.

We need your support to help preserve 330,000 acres of pristine coastal and marine habitat in the Bijagós Islands, off the Atlantic coast of Guinea-Bissau, Africa. 🌊🌿

With Partenariat Régional pour la Conservation de la zone côtière et Marine en Afrique de l’Ouest (PRCM), Rainforest Trust is working to establish Marine Protected Areas that safeguard the area’s abundant biodiversity.

A rich mix of old-growth mangroves, seagrass beds, mudflats, and sand flats surround the 88 islands of the Bijagós Archipelago. Its intertidal ecosystems sustain sea turtles, sharks, rays, dolphins, and one of the richest fisheries in West Africa.

A million migrating birds converge across the seasons, like Grey Plovers, which spend their winters here after flying thousands of miles from Arctic breeding grounds.

Long-distance migratory shorebirds like these are among the most vulnerable to habitat loss along the flyway.

We can make a difference for biodiversity and the birds of the Bijagós Islands. 💚

Off the coast of Madagascar, Endangered Whale Sharks visit pristine reefs to breed and feed. These reefs support hundreds of species of coral and more than 300 species of fish. Though Whale Sharks are solitary, the reefs’ abundant food has drawn groups as large as 500.

Overfishing, destructive gear, illegal exploitation, unsustainable tourism, and pollution threaten the vast web of marine life around Madagascar’s reefs. Whale Sharks are also vulnerable to noise and collisions from passing ships.

Rainforest Trust is helping to support the government of Madagascar in creating the Tandavandriva Nosy Be Marine Protected Area to cover 695,400 acres. Linking to other conservation areas, this will support the long-term survival of reef ecosystems vital to marine life.

This , help us protect the Angola Highlands.

Right now, the rainy season in the Angola Highlands is nearly over. Trillions of gallons of rain have fallen since October, and they will send ripple effects across the continent.

This “water tower” is pivotal to life throughout the region. It is also unprotected and vulnerable to growing threats.

We need your help to safeguard 3.1 million acres of this extraordinary landscape.

Without this watershed, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife wonders could dry up. The highlands supply 95% of the water in the Okavango Delta, where giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, lions, elephants, hippos, antelopes, and millions of birds seek refuge from the Kalahari Desert.

The delta is reason enough to protect the Angola Highlands, but it is only one part of the story.

👉 Swipe for 4 reasons we must act now to protect the Angola Highlands!

Your gift will support local partner Fundação Lisima to protect 3.1 million acres of this critical ecosystem.

Donations will be matched until we reach our global fundraising goal of $100,000!

Earth Day is tomorrow, but you can double your impact today.

The Angola Highlands watershed gives rise to mighty African rivers and sustains the world’s largest wildlife oasis. But threats are advancing from all sides. 🐘🌿

🚜 Land is being cleared for agriculture, charcoal production, and development.
🛢️ Oil and gas extraction is on the rise.
🔥 Climate change is severely straining ecosystems.

The Luchazi name for this landscape, Lisima Lya Mwono, means “Source of Life,” and the region is abundant with biodiversity. The waters that flow from the highlands sustain countless animals and millions of people. Their survival depends on the Lisima landscape.

Together, we can help protect 3.1 million acres of this incredible landscape. Your gift will support local partner, Fundação Lisima, in their work with local communities to establish conservation areas across traditional territories, sacred forests, and critical habitat.

We have one day left to meet our goal, and we need your help!

Follow the link below to give now for Earth Day, and your donation will be matched until we reach our global fundraising goal of $100,000. That means you can have double the impact! 🌎🐾

Deforestation is advancing toward the Angola Highlands Water Tower, the vital source of the Okavango Delta.

Without these headwaters, the Okavango Delta would dry up, leaving millions of animals struggling to survive and devastating one of Earth’s most extraordinary ecosystems.

We cannot lose this pivotal watershed. Every year, the Angola Highlands Water Tower captures trillions of gallons of rain that flow through the Kalahari Desert and bring the Okavango Delta to life.

This extraordinary system creates one of Earth’s most important wildlife havens for biodiversity, a refuge that sustains zebras, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, and more than 400 species of birds. ☀️🌳🦓🦒🐘

You can make a difference for a critical wildlife oasis! 🐾🌎

To celebrate Earth Day and this globally important landscape, donations will be doubled for the whole month!

Your gift will go directly toward efforts on the ground to protect:

🌿 3.1 million acres of critical habitat across 5 community-led conservation areas
🦁 Vital habitat for African Lions and Endangered African Wild Dogs
🐘 One of the largest populations of Endangered African Savanna Elephants in the world
💧 A freshwater source for wildlife and people across 7 countries

In Brazil, the world’s largest wetland provides habitat for a rich biodiversity of resident species and a critical stopover for migrating birds. Twenty times larger than the Florida Everglades, the Pantanal sustains dense populations of Jaguars, Giant Otters, and more than 650 bird species.

Human impact, including intense pressure from agricultural conversion, is rapidly taking its toll. Due to development, the Pantanal has lost about 30% of its water volume. Rising temperatures and a drying trend have also sparked record-breaking wildfires.
