Online event - Between the Notes: Capturing the creative impact of music in healthcare settings

📅 Wednesday 24 June
🕚 11.00 - 12.00
💻 Microsoft Teams

We're hosting this free interactive session as part of the Healing Arts Birmingham programme from the Jameel Arts & Health Lab in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Explore the challenges in evaluating the impact of our music for diverse populations including babies and parents in neonatal settings, patients in ICU, young people in an inpatient CAHMS unit and care home residents living with dementia. Attendees will come away with some of the tools we’ve created and a better understanding of how to explore the impact of the arts in health.

“We see first-hand how the music brings the group together and how people who are often quiet or non-verbal begin to move and engage with others around them. The smallest sway or foot movement to the rhythm shows us that those who perhaps show no other reaction in their face are actually responding to what they hear.

We’ve also had relatives come along to sessions alone when they get respite as they say they just want to relax with their friends and enjoy themselves in a break from the hard day to day life which they have.” - Jenny Rowe, Project Coordinator at Murrayfield Memory Lane Café.

We are very saddened to hear of the passing of our Vice President, Dame Felicity Lott.

Dame Felicity Lott was a well-loved and successful soprano singer, making her debut at the English National Opera in 1975. She was a longstanding supporter of Music in Hospitals & Care for over 30 years. Our thoughts are with Felicity's family at this time.

Last Friday was VE Day, which marks the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. We have recently been sharing live music with naval veterans and their families at The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust care homes in Portsmouth and Gillingham.

“Music has given our residents a way to express emotions that might be hard to put into words. It can recreate a sense of camaraderie and connection, which many veterans miss after leaving service.” 🎖️🎶

It’s 🧠💬

Live music experiences help people struggling with their mental health to feel relaxed and confident. When people are feeling anxious or alone, our live music offers a way to create new memories and share experiences with others, helping relieve frustration, stress and isolation.

We know that live music can have a positive impact on the wellbeing of hospital staff, reducing stress and increasing a sense of community at work.

“Having that gentle, calming music playing makes a real difference and brings a sense of peace not just for the patients but for staff as well. Music offers something extra to staff, it is a way of giving something back to them,” said a Senior Nurse Manager of a critical care ward in South Wales.
