On our stall in Kingston Marketplace on 19th September we commemorated the International Day of Peace ("Peace Day", actually 21 September). We had lots of beautiful paper doves on which passers-by wrote peace messages, then hung them on our "peace tree". At the end of our action the tree was installed in All Saints Church, with more doves, leaflets and pens and a board to explain to others how they could participate in this.

On Thursday 6th August, the 81st anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb, on Hiroshima in Japan, we held two events:
At midday, we held a silent vigil in the centre of Kingston, while members distributed leaflets to passing shoppers.
In the evening we held our usual candle-lit commemoration (using battery-controlled lights) beside the river, in Canbury Gardens, attended by the Mayor of Kingston, Cllr Thay Thayalan, and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jane Lim. Our member Hilary made a moving speech, and the Mayor added very relevant comments.
We then strewed white flowers onto the Thames as a gesture in remembrance of the souls of the departed.
Thanks to Steve Ransome for the evening photos.

On Thursday 6th August, we shall remember the dropping of the first atomic bomb, on Hiroshima, on that date in 1945:

(a) Noon to 2pm We shall hold a vigil outside the Bentall Centre in Kingston.
(b) 8pm onwards Our Hiroshima Commemoration will take place beside the river, in Canbury Gardens, attended by the Mayor of Kingston, Cllr Thay Thayalan, and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jane Lim. We shall, as usual, strew white flowers onto the Thames as a gesture in remembrance of the souls of the departed.
NOTE: In view of the tinder-dry conditions, we shall NOT be lighting candles but using battery-controlled lights. Please do not bring anything involving matches or open flames, even in jam-jars.
All are welcome to join us in these commemorations.

Sign the petition! Say NO to military conscription in the UK!

Today, on International Conscientious Objectors' Day (CO Day), a coalition of thirteen peace organisations including the PPU is launching a new petition calling on the UK Government to rule out any future introduction of military conscription.

With politicians and military figures calling for 'national service', and conscription on the rise across Europe, the threat of conscription seems very real. We must act now to oppose it.

Conscription would represent a major attack on civil liberties. It would force young people to participate in war and militarism, at a time when peacebuilding and cooperation are so desperately needed.

Now is the time to raise our voices against this growing threat. Please sign and share the petition now!
