Our sewing group were delighted to take part in the ReNew festival, recently organised by Veolia at Grand Junction. This was all about the power of sustainability, teaching people creative ways to re-use and recycle their old belongings.

Sewing teacher Manisha and coordinator Parul were representing our sewing group, showing off their colourful creations, and sharing valuable skills with attendees of all ages. It was lovely to see children learning how to sew and knit, as well as other creative ideas such as creating a basket out of old t-shirts.

Led by a professional instructor, the sessions are happening on Mondays from 10am at Johnson’s Place in Churchill Gardens. There is also a secure play area where your children can play while you work out.

An amber heat health alert is now in place until Friday evening, with temperatures expected to reach over 35°C on Thursday.

Please look out for friends, family and neighbours who may be more at risk from the heat. This includes older people, young children, and those living with long-term health conditions.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe:

💧 Drink plenty of fluids.
🪟 Keep your home cool by closing blinds or curtains during the day and opening windows when it's cooler outside (if it's safe to do so).
🧴 If you're heading outdoors, wear sunscreen, seek shade where possible, and try to avoid the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm.

For more information on staying safe in hot weather, visit the NHS website or search 'NHS heatwave'.

We took a trip to Margate for “a day of pure happiness” by the seaside, as one attendee described it.

Participants were free to explore the town, and we suggested places to visit. Some went to enjoy the sun at the beach, while others went to browse the second hand shops or admire the art at the Turner Contemporary gallery. And of course, everyone met up to eat some traditional fish and chips from Peter's Fish Factory.

Participants told us “It was time to relax, to walk freely, breathe fresh sea air, be ourselves, chat away & socialise with others.”

We received fantastic feedback on this “lovely” and “meticulously planned” day out, which was “thoroughly enjoyed” by our attendees.

Meet Alan, the Chelsea Pensioner who comes to our Centre to teach Line Dancing to our over 50s service users.

Alan was keen to show off his iconic red Chelsea Pensioner uniform, but we usually find him on the dancefloor in his Hawaiian shirt.

Line Dancing is a great way to stay fit while having fun, and we love having Alan visit us for his monthly dance classes.

Our Young at Heart service users got together last week for another wonderful Tea Party.

We enjoyed tea and cakes and danced all afternoon to a selection of classic tunes from DJ Supa Sarah. We also enjoyed a salsa lesson, raffle, and celebrated the birthday of one of our guests!

A big thank you goes out to PIMCO for kindly supporting the event by donating funds and bringing a team of volunteers.

Attendees told us this was “a great afternoon with great volunteers” who were “so kind and helpful.” There was also a special shoutout for Frosty from the PIMCO team, as one guest told us, “I love Frosty, he danced with us all afternoon long, such a nice man.”
