As we mark the anniversary, we remember the 255 who didn’t make it home.

We also remember all that served in the conflict. Alan was one of the youngest to serve, turning 18 on the day of the surrender. Later that same year, he started to lose his sight to retinitis pigmentosa. This year, he becomes our new President, a role that reflects his commitment to our community.

We remember those who are gone, and we stand with those who continue to remember, like Alan.

Leave a message of support for blind veterans: https://sbrew.link/pdjC0EmK

June is Armed Forces Month - a time to honour the incredible men and women who serve, have served, and the families, reservists, cadets and charities who stand behind them. With coming up on 27 June, it’s the perfect moment to show our appreciation.

We have created a special online message wall where you can leave words of thanks, encouragement and support for veterans living with sight loss. Your message, no matter how small, can mean the world to someone who has given so much.

Let’s show our veterans they’re never forgotten.

This , we’re recognising the incredible contribution of the spouses, partners and family members who support blind veterans and others living with sight loss, day in and day out. 💙

We know that when someone loses their sight, it can be life-changing not only for them, but for those closest to them too. That’s why we’re here not just for our beneficiaries, but for the people who care for them as well.

As part of that support, we’ve created a guide to Carer’s Allowance, outlining who may be eligible, how much it is, and how to apply. For those caring for someone for 35 hours or more a week, this financial support may be available.

The late blind veteran Ken was among the Allied troops who landed on Sword Beach on D-Day.

His memories were shared during the 80th anniversary commemorations, and now thanks to Brighton & Hove Buses, his story will continue to be remembered.

One of the company’s coastal route buses has been named in Ken’s honour, with an onboard plaque sharing his life and service with passengers.

Read his story to find out why this is such a fitting tribute: https://sbrew.link/3QX8IsGP

Ken was one of many blind veterans who served on D-Day. As time passes, their memories become more precious than ever.

We will remember them. Today, and always.

There’s no single type of volunteer.

People bring different life experiences, knowledge and ways of connecting. That's a big part of what shapes the incredible support our blind veterans receive.

And in return, we make sure they’re never on their own: proper training, ongoing support, and a community around them. Like this group, recently together for a morning of learning (and a good catch-up).

Thinking about joining us? There’s a place here for you. 👏

We’d love you to help us celebrate Frances. 💙

Frances volunteers as a memoir writer, helping blind veterans record their memories, experiences and life stories.

In one project, she spent more than 120 hours helping bring a blind veteran’s wartime memoirs to life. It meant working carefully through handwritten pages, photographs and memories, and being trusted with a very personal story.

Frances describes the role as “the honour and privilege of being invited into the lives of remarkable veterans.”

She recently received a Volunteers Award, but we think more people should know what sits behind it: the hours she gave, the care she took, and the story she helped preserve.

Her advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

“Do so, you’ll never regret it!”

Thank you, Frances. If you’d like to add your own message of thanks, please leave one below. 💙

“Having a Forces background makes it easy to chat about the army way of life, the banter, the camaraderie…”

Dawn served in the REME Territorial Army for 22 years. Today, that experience helps her connect with the blind veterans she supports.

She visits Bob, who completed National Service in the REME, and their conversations often come back to Army life: Bob’s soldier days, how things have changed over the years, and the familiar humour that comes with time served.

And, of course, Bob loves the fresh cup of tea Dawn makes him during her visits.

“Becoming a volunteer is so rewarding,” says Dawn. “Knowing you are enriching the life of another veteran is so satisfying.”

Thank you, Dawn, for using your experience to support others. 💙

29,217 hours.

That’s the time our volunteers have given over the past year.

Often, volunteering looks very ordinary from the outside. A knock at the door. A phone call. A lift somewhere. A cup of tea made just the way someone likes it.

But for the blind veterans we support, that time can mean company, routine and something to look forward to.

It’s hard to overstate what those hours make possible.

Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing a few of the people behind that number.

To our volunteers, thank you. 💙

If you’re wondering whether volunteering could be for you, we’d love to hear from you: https://sbrew.link/x3r3va2Z
