Build Up Foundation

Build Up Foundation Build Up runs free construction projects across London for young people aged 6 - 23 to design and build public spaces.

In 2022, Build Up partnered with the People’s Empowerment Alliance for Custom House (PEACH) - a local to Newham community-led organisation. Together, Build Up delivered a series of design sessions in the Custom House community centre.

Over Summer half term, Build Up and PEACH worked with young residents to generate ideas for local green space improvements. Young people came together to design and build a new community garden, complete with a communal picnic bench, on Burrard Road.

The final design consisted of two large picnic tables that could seat whole families and some benches and chairs for resting, surrounded by flower beds for colour and to create the feeling of a small garden.

The structures were built by young people over the summer holidays and upon completion there was a big celebration. Since then, the tables have been used for doing homework and other activities.

“It was really fun because you could see our ideas come to life. It makes me proud of where I'm from.” - Serine, 15

As a reminder, if you’re a community group looking to transform outdoor spaces that matter to young people, you can apply to our Public Spaces Open Call until 28th April.

The Structure in Larkhall Park was selected, shaped and built by young people as part of Build Up’s 2024 public spaces Open Call.

The Structure is a space for young people to feel safe, connected, and at home. It consists of a shelter, climbing wall, a climbable roof, vertical and horizontal lounging nets and benches. Designed for both safety and privacy, the structures offer elevated views of the park and create natural hang out spots.

In total 130 young people took part in the project, working alongside Oasis Play, London Borough of Lambeth and Friends of Larkhall Park.

The Build Up Open Call is an annual opportunity for young people, parents, local residents, community groups and councils to nominate projects for Build Up to work on. Each year its themes are set by our Youth Advisory Board, who then review potential projects and select those to take forward.

Our second round of the Open Call is back - and this time we’re looking for projects in public spaces.

This Open Call is about projects in spaces that are shared, visible, and accessible 24/7. This could include estates, parks and high streets, where young people can shape spaces used by the wider community.

We’re looking for youth-led organisations (or those working closely with young people) who have access to a public space and want to collaborate.

This is not a funding pot. We work in partnership to develop projects and secure funding together. This includes significant time investment and expertise given to successful projects from the Build Up team.

📅 Deadline: Tuesday 28th April
If not right for your organisation, sharing this could help the right partner find us.

At Build Up, we work to build the power of young people to be heard, to shape where they live, and to flourish with their communities.

We believe a fair society is one with young people at the centre of it: equipped with the skills to shape and build their communities and the spaces they occupy.

🍂FREE AUTUMN BBQ FOR LOCALS TO BLUE SQUARE!🍂

After a very successful community day back in August, we go again for round 2 this Saturday, 1st November 2025 between 12-3pm.

So far in our ambitious and exciting work to improve Broadway fields, we have worked with local communities and created early-stage design ideas for improvements to:

🌿Planting and green spaces
🛝Play areas for different age groups
🪑Seating and places to rest
👫Spaces for sports and community activity

We invite you, who are local to the space, to join us again for more conversations about the space, more delicious food, more fun sports, and more great vibes. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you this Saturday, at Blue Square in Broadway Fields, Deptford!😆🔥

🌱 The Friends of Tottenhall Recreation Ground in Enfield, North East London, formed as a group of local residents with an aim to improve the park for everyone.

👩🏿‍🤝‍👩🏽The Friends felt that the community needed to provide more for young people in the park. Build Up was given an open brief and worked with 90 young people from the local primary school.

👟The design was inspired by parkour, with each element aiming to create a space where young people could socialise and practise. Together, we developed a space where they could hang out, play, and use the platforms as stages to perform for each other.

“The children that we chose were those who perhaps struggled more with the academic side. But we try really hard to let these children know that they can be successful in all sorts of ways. So for those particular children, the impact from this project was their confidence, the way that they were able to stand in front of their peers and present what they've done. And that's something they're proud of. I know they've taken family members and shown them what they've built.

We’re seeing children be successful, grow in resilience and in confidence, and teamwork skills. All the skills that children are developing, resilience, respect, confidence, creativity, they were right in there In the Build Up project. “ - Headteacher, Oakthorpe School
