We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the great composer Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, known to all simply as Vangelis.
Vangelis composed a beautiful piece of music to mark the moment that Professor Stephen Hawking’s ashes were interred at Westminster Abbey, near those of Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
ESA (the European Space Agency) arranged to broadcast this music into space during the service as a mark of respect and remembrance.
The signal was directed towards a black hole so that his beautiful composition, overlaid with the voice of Stephen Hawking, will travel through space and exist on the event horizon for as much of time as is imaginable.
May they both rest in peace.
