AN OPEN LETTER TO Delly Singah.
From the Board Members of Cameroon Career Women Award (CCWA)
Dear Delly,
We write this open letter to you as the Board Members of Cameroon Career Women Awards 🇨🇲 (CCWA), not out of hatred or malice, but because we believe that facts must be put on record and the truth must be told.
First and foremost, you need to understand what Cameroon Career Women Award stands for. CCWA stands for women and the girl child. Our work is centred on empowering women, supporting girls, recognising women who are making a difference, and contributing to the development of our communities.
Our motto has always been:
“You educate a girl child, you build a nation.”
It is therefore disappointing that, after approximately ten years, you have chosen to publicly discuss the organisation and your journey while presenting a version of events that does not accurately reflect what happened.
Let us clarify one important point.
You recently went live and also made a written statement in which you acknowledged CCWA, but your acknowledgment was directed primarily towards the CEO rather than the organisation itself.
Delly, we want to make this very clear:
The CEO of Cameroon Career Women Award did not facilitate your coming to the United Kingdom.
Your invitation was not a personal invitation from the CEO. The CEO received the matter, took it to the Board, and the appropriate organisational process followed.
At that time, Cameroon Career Women Award did not even have an award category specifically for women working in charity. It was Nora Brown who came forward and pleaded for the organisation to consider creating an award category for women involved in charitable work.
And why did Nora make that request?
She did it because of you.
Nora brought the matter to the CEO, and the CEO presented it to the Board. When the Board considered the proposal, we recognised that there were many women who had dedicated themselves to charitable work as a career and a calling. As a result, we agreed to include that category within CCWA.
That is the truth.
Regarding your coming to the United Kingdom
We also want to correct the impression that the CEO personally brought you to the UK.
The process involved the organisation, and the husband of the CEO played a significant role in facilitating the invitation process, including signing the invitation. The CEO herself was not the person who personally facilitated your relocation to the United Kingdom.
CCWA has, over the years, issued invitations to individuals to attend its programmes and events. Where visas were granted, the relevant authorities communicated the outcomes to the organisation.
However, there was something different about your situation.
Everyone who was invited was expected to attend and return to their country afterwards. Your situation created circumstances that placed the organisation and individuals connected to it in a difficult and unexpected position.
Delly, do you know the consequences?
Do you know how many people were subsequently affected because of what happened after you came to the UK?
Do you know how many doors became more difficult to open for other people?
Do you know the risks that Cameroon Career Women Award took in allowing your situation to be handled differently rather than simply insisting that you return home like other participants?
Do you know what the husband of the CEO personally went through because of the circumstances surrounding your failure to return?
And perhaps most importantly:
Do you know how your situation affected the organisation's ability to invite other people?
Afterwards, invitations became more difficult, particularly for people who had never travelled with the organisation before. There was increased caution because of what had happened.
These were consequences that people within CCWA carried quietly.
Nobody came out publicly to attack you.
Nobody used the situation to destroy your name.
Nobody went online to tell the world what had happened.
We kept silent.
But after ten years, you chose to speak.
Now, after approximately ten years, you have gained recognition and popularity on social media, and when you were invited again in connection with Cameroon Career Women Award, you publicly distanced yourself from the organisation and spoke in a manner that, in our view, diminished the reputation of a prestigious organisation.
An organisation that has worked for women.
An organisation that has worked for girls.
An organisation that has supported and recognised people beyond yourself.
And yet, when you recently chose to acknowledge the organisation, you did not even have the courage to properly identify it by its full name.
You referred to “CCA.”
What is CCA?
The official abbreviation is CCWA — Cameroon Career Women Award.
If you are going to acknowledge an organisation that you claim played a role in your journey, then acknowledge it properly.
You are not the only person CCWA has helped.
Delly, you are not the beginning and you are not the end of the Cameroon Career Women Award story.
There are countless women and girls whose lives have been touched by the work of this organisation.
There are girls whose education has been supported.
There are women whose work has been recognised.
There are families and communities that have benefited from initiatives connected to the organisation.
So when you publicly speak against CCWA, we ask you to consider the wider consequences.
Do you know how many children's school fees could not be paid because resources and opportunities were affected?
Do you know how many girls may have lost opportunities to continue their education?
Do you know how many women have been affected?
Do you know?
This is bigger than Delly Singar.
This is about an organisation that has stood for women and the girl child for years.
We are not asking you to owe CCWA anything.
You do not owe Cameroon Career Women Award your life.
You do not owe the organisation your success.
You do not owe anyone an explanation for every step you have taken since coming to the UK.
But there is something you do owe:
You owe the organisation the truth.
And if you publicly made statements that were inaccurate or unfair to CCWA, then you owe the organisation an apology.
If you now recognise that CCWA played a role in your journey, then have the courage to acknowledge the organisation by its proper name and acknowledge the people who actually played those roles.
Do not rewrite history.
Do not turn an organisational decision into the personal achievement of one individual.
And do not use the platform you have built to diminish an organisation that has continued to serve women and girls.
Finally, Delly,
When you spoke against CCWA previously, the CEO eventually came live and addressed some of the issues because people were asking questions and demanding answers.
Today, people have again asked the CEO to come live and respond.
But we believe the CEO is bigger than this.
She does not need to spend her time going live every time someone decides to attack or undermine an organisation she has helped build.
That is why, this time, she will not be coming live.
Instead, we, the Board Members, are speaking.
We are putting the facts on record.
We are asking you to reflect on your words, your actions, and the consequences of what you have said publicly.
If you truly recognise the role Cameroon Career Women Award played in your journey, then we ask you to do the honourable thing:
Come forward, acknowledge CCWA properly, correct the misinformation, and tender an apology to the organisation.
CCWA has survived many challenges.
CCWA has continued to stand.
CCWA continues to believe in women.
CCWA continues to believe in the girl child.
And our motto remains:
“You educate a girl child, you build a nation.”
We will continue to stand for that mission.
