London Victorians Toastmasters Club was honoured to have Dan Magill deliver his workshop, "Help! I'm Not Funny", earlier this week.

Dan is a 2x World Championship of Public Speaking semi-finalist and 5x District 91 Humorous Speech Champion. He's also just been selected to speak at TEDx Kingston upon Thames, so he knows exactly how humour lands on stage.

He shared the building blocks of a great punchline, and how to land it with real timing. Then he made it hands on, turning it into a game and pulling volunteers up to try it themselves.

Confidence grows one audience at a time.

Dan Magill knows a thing or two about building confidence on stage.

In this clip, he explains how Toastmasters competitions can take you from speaking to 10 or 15 people at club level, to audiences of 100 and eventually potentially 1,000 - building your confidence step by step along the way.

Self-deprecation is the fastest laugh you'll ever get. But use it wrong, and it backfires.

Here's why it works: as a speaker, you're the one with the power, the mic, the stage, the room's attention. Take that power away from yourself and joke about yourself instead, and there's no one else in the room who can be offended. That's what makes it the quickest laugh available to you.
