The Traveller Movement's response to Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch's speech - The Traveller Movement is deeply concerned by comments made by Kemi Badenoch in her speech on equality under the law, in which she referred to “Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities breaking laws that no one else would get away with.”

As recognised ethnic minority communities, Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people should expect the same standards of fairness and responsible public discourse afforded to any other ethnic group.

We are also concerned by proposals to abolish the Public Sector Equality Duty. While reasonable people may disagree about how equality law should operate, the duty plays an important role in ensuring that public bodies consider the impact of their decisions on communities that have historically faced discrimination and exclusion.

The Public Sector Equality Duty does not provide special treatment to particular groups. Rather, it helps ensure that public authorities understand how policies and services affect different communities before decisions are made. This preventative approach promotes better decision-making and stronger accountability.

Removing the Public Sector Equality Duty risks creating a cycle in which inequalities are identified only after harm has occurred, rather than being addressed at the earliest stage. Over time, this could result in the experiences and needs of marginalised communities carrying less weight in public decision-making, making it harder to challenge disadvantage and rebuild trust in public institutions.

For Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller communities, which continue to face significant barriers in areas such as education, health, housing and access to public services, the potential consequences of weakening these safeguards are particularly concerning. Any proposal to remove the Public Sector Equality Duty would lead to the most marginalised communities being put most at risk.

At a time when community cohesion is under pressure, political leaders should be helping to build understanding between communities, not deepening division through language that risks portraying entire ethnic groups through the actions of a minority.

The Traveller Movement remains committed to working constructively with policymakers of all political parties to tackle inequality, challenge discrimination and ensure that Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that Reform-run councils that have removed Ukrainian flags from public buildings will reverse their decision. Meanwhile, the prime minister has threatened legislation to force tech firms to take more action on explicit images of children.

“These water cans and the bowl are from 1940. They were a present to my granny and granddad and were passed to my mum and dad on their wedding day 52 years ago. They were then passed to me and my wife, Julie, on our wedding day. My granddad washed my dad in this bowl when he was a baby, and he is 73. My dad washed me in the same bowl and I’m 43!”

“This little Royal Worcester fruit pot was bought by my auntie over 40 years ago. She told me the story of when they was stopping around the Leeds area where they regularly travelled for work. She spotted it in a little shop and asked the lady if she could pay weekly for it. The price is still on the bottom, £7, it may not seem a lot now but in those days it was very expensive. Royal Worcester was a very sought after pottery in the Traveller community and still is now. My auntie gave me this little pot when I got married which is a tradition to pass down through the generations when the girls get married.”

“This rosary was my nanny’s, her friend fetched it for her all the way from Portugal. She always wanted to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima but she got too sick to go. I’d like to go one day and bring her rosary with me. I keep it in my handbag everywhere I go.”

Lots of Irish Travellers are Roman Catholic, and the faith is a huge part of their cultural identity and family life.

Today we have a lovely contribution for our ‘Belongings & Belonging’ from a Romani (Gypsy) woman, Ann Lee.

“I bought the welsh blankets for my daughter when she was a baby, and the silver dish and turquoise and coral beads were my grandmothers, passed down to me. Also, a picture of my bangles.”

Owning Welsh blankets is a strong tradition in the Romani (Gypsy) community, as they’re very warm and thick – perfect for wintertime in a living wagon. Today, they are still used in trailers and in prams, as they’re made from high quality wool and will keep you warm.

“These items are very sentimental to me. The horse and trap ornament used to sit on top of my Nana and Granddad’s old fashioned square television. It’s very old and old fashioned but I would never part with it. The Royal Doulton ornaments are very old too. My Nana was very clumsy, she broke them and glued them back together many times. She had arthritis in her hands so thinking now, that was probably why. She took great pride in washing them and arranging them back in her cabinet. The apron was my Nana’s too. We never went out for food, my Nana home cooked everything and she was a lovely cook. Every Sunday she would make dinner followed by homemade fruit tarts and cakes, it was delicious. My Granddad dealt horses so we had a lot of company all the time, so she made sure to always have pans of soup, roast meats and cakes on the go, and the table was always set.”

These Royal Doulton ornaments were first introduced in 1929, with iconic characters like ‘The Old Balloon Seller’. The figurines were all made in England and are still collectible to this day.

“This is a cast iron hanging pan and in our community they was used outside on the fire to cook on. I have memories as a young boy on the road to Appleby Fair, my uncle would sing a few songs and cook what ever he had bought out of the butchers on the way. Best times of our lives.”
