General Osteopathic Council We work with the public and osteopaths to promote patient safety by setting, maintaining and developing standards of osteopathic practice and conduct.

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) regulates the practice of osteopathy in the United Kingdom. By law osteopaths must be registered with us in order to practise in the UK. You can use the Register on our website to find a local osteopath. The GOsC is a charity registered in England and Wales (1172749). Every year we spend over £26,000 so that osteopaths and students in their final and penultimate years of education have access to research journals through Elsevier, including the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.

For 2025-30 we have also set aside £150,000 to contribute to the funding of the National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR). Projects currently funded by the GOsC and run by NCOR include one that is looking at the enablers and barriers to becoming an osteopath. Our Professional Conduct Committee has decided that Jeremy Marquette, of Toward Health clinic in Bristol, be removed from our Register of osteopaths.

It’s our role to protect the public, patients and the reputation of the osteopathic profession. We do this by making sure only those who meet our standards for safe practice are on our Register and can legally practise osteopathy in the UK.

Decisions to remove osteopaths from the register are publicised so that patients can access information to keep them safe. Osteopaths (and other kinds of therapists) often work independently and without employers and teams around them and so access to information is necessary to support patient safety. We recommend that all patients check the registration of the osteopath (or therapist) that they are seeing prior to seeing them.

We have removed the ability to comment on this post to ensure a safe environment for all readers.

Mr Marquette has exercised his right of appeal to the High Court against the Professional Conduct Committee’s decision. The Interim Suspension Order put in place by the Committee remains in force until a decision is made by the High Court, which means Mr Marquette is not allowed to practise as a registered osteopath during this time.

Being regulated is part of what it means to be an osteopath in the UK, and being an osteopath means more than holding a title protected by law.

Only those who meet the requirements of regulation - those who are qualified, insured, and working to high standards of practice - can be on our Register and legally call themselves an osteopath.

This helps patients and the public feel confident in what osteopaths do.

It should now be easier to find the information you need. You can search our Register for an osteopath near you, or find out how to raise a concern about an osteopath, or someone calling themselves an osteopath who is not on our Register.

As regulated healthcare professionals, osteopaths are expected to deliver patient-centred care, listening to the experiences of each individual patient to understand what they need from their osteopathy treatment.

With today marking the beginning of South Asian Heritage Month, we’re reminding osteopaths to consider, as part of their CPD, how they might build on their understanding of the experiences and needs of their South Asian patients.
