General Osteopathic Council

General Osteopathic Council We work with the public and osteopaths to promote patient safety by setting, maintaining and developing standards of osteopathic practice and conduct.

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) regulates the practice of osteopathy in the United Kingdom. By law osteopaths must be registered with us in order to practise in the UK. You can use the Register on our website to find a local osteopath. The GOsC is a charity registered in England and Wales (1172749). We also have a Twitter account at https://twitter.com/gosc_uk and a LinkedIn page at https://www.linkedin.com/company/general-osteopathic-council

Osteopaths, you can join us every Tuesday on Zoom to meet and chat with some of our staff and discuss any topics or issues that you would like to talk about.

‘Chat with GOsC’ sessions are an informal space and so far we’ve had discussions on how to fill out the PDR planning section in a CPD cycle and speaking with patients about what they can expect when attending an osteopathy appointment. Come along and share ideas or ask questions you may have.

Check the recent ebulletin for the link to join, or log in to the o zone to find the Zoom link on the home page: https://ozone.osteopathy.org.uk/home/

We're recruiting for two osteopaths and one non osteopath to join our Investigating Committee, which considers all concerns raised against osteopaths received by the GOsC.

If you’ve never joined a committee like this before, and have a strong sense of fairness and independence, you’re welcome to find out more about what’s involved by attending our 1-hour webinar at 6pm on Wednesday 10 June 2026.

This webinar is aimed at anyone new to these sorts of roles or new to regulation in general. We are looking for a diverse range of candidates, regardless of experience.

Find out more about the role or register for the webinar: https://www.osteopathy.org.uk/about-us/the-organisation/recruitment/

Some people think that GOsC is able to decide who can prescribe medicines and who can’t. But that’s not true. The government decides which professions are given the right to prescribe and the right to administer medicines under a patient group direction (PGD). A PGD allows some registered health professionals to supply and/or administer certain medicines to a pre-defined group of patients, without them having to see a prescriber.
