General Osteopathic Council We work with the public and osteopaths to promote patient safety by setting, maintaining and developing standards of osteopathic practice and conduct.

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) regulates the practice of osteopathy in the United Kingdom. By law osteopaths must be registered with us in order to practise in the UK. You can use the Register on our website to find a local osteopath. The GOsC is a charity registered in England and Wales (1172749). In July 2026 and in collaboration with the Council for Osteopathic Educational Institutions (COEI) and the London School of Osteopathy, we held an Educator Roadshow.

The event brought educators from different providers together for a day designed to create space to share practice, explore some of the issues currently shaping osteopathic education and, importantly, learn with colleagues beyond their own providers.

We’ve seen the number of fitness to practise concerns and investigations grow significantly, and this is not unique to the osteopathy profession.

Since 2018 the number of fitness to practise cases we are looking into has increased by 74%. Many of these cases are about professional boundaries.

These investigations are often complex and take a long time to reach a conclusion. To investigate concerns in a fair, robust and timely way, we must make sure we have enough income. Between 2023 and 2026, despite our actions to save money, the cost of regulation was more than our income by around £540,000.

This is why we are consulting on changes to the fees, and we want to hear your views. We have published our Annual Report and Accounts 2025-26, setting out our work over the past year and how we have used our resources to regulate osteopathy.

We know this year’s report will be read in the context of our current consultation on proposed changes to registration fees. Osteopaths are right to expect clear information about how fees are used, and the report includes infographics showing where our income comes from and how we spend it.

Our next meeting of the GOsC Student Forum will take place online from 6.30-8pm Monday 26 October. Discussion will focus on our consultation on changes to registration fees for osteopaths, and will give students a chance to share their views, ask questions and speak directly with our Chief Executive and one of our osteopath members of Council.

As a regulator, we handle osteopathy-related whistleblowing concerns. In 2025-26, we received concerns from people in a range of roles and settings, including an osteopathic colleague, a practice receptionist, a GP in a multi-disciplinary practice and a university human resources lead.

Our Independent Support Service, available 24/7 every day of the year, is run by an independent charity and offers free, confidential support to those involved in our fitness to practise process, including whistleblowers.

We publish information about the whistleblowing concerns we received and what action was taken as part of a joint report with other regulators.
