We’re delighted to reshare this opportunity from our member charity, Equity Charitable Trust (ECT), which supports professionals across the performing arts with welfare grants, educational bursaries and specialist money and benefits advice. As part of the Acting for Others network of 14 member charities, ECT helps theatre workers stay in or return to work, retrain, or manage periods of financial difficulty.

Established in 1988 in honour of theatre director and former RADA Principal John Fernald, this award supports emerging Theatre Directors & Theatre Makers to develop their practice.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆?
🎭 Theatre Directors / Theatre Makers with some professional experience
🇬🇧🇮🇪 Must be a citizen of the UK or Republic of Ireland

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿?
£10,000 annually, awarded to 1–3 directors.
Funds support director’s fees and/or living costs (not production costs).
Theatres may also apply on behalf of a director they wish to hire.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆
Independent applicants submit a personal statement, project outline, budget, CV and reference.
Theatres applying on behalf of a director submit project details, contract, accounts and supporting documents.

Beautiful even in the rain. I can never come here without hearing Feed the Birds in my head. Partly because it's just such a joy to sing - which theatre kid doesn't secretly long to stand on the steps here and belt "Tuppence A Bag"?! But also, with its message of finding meaning and purpose in acts of every day kindness, it feels highly relevant to chaplaincy. This wasn't the Mary Poppins song that won the Sherman brothers their 1964 Academy Award, but it is said that it is the song Walt Disney played in difficult times. A reminder that small gestures are important, and that a little loving kindness is not little at all.
