Mangrove Community Group joins with many others in mourning the unexpected passing of Professor Jason Arday on Friday, 14 August, and in honouring his life, remarkable achievements and enduring legacy.
We celebrate Professor Arday’s outstanding academic achievements and his significant contributions to scholarship, higher education and public life. His dedication, intellect and commitment to education have left a lasting legacy. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, students and all those whose lives were touched and inspired by his work and presence.
As we remember and celebrate his achievements, we must also acknowledge the racism and hostility he experienced from sections of the media, as well as the scrutiny, lack of care and discrimination he faced as an autistic man.
Such treatment was unacceptable. Racism, ableism and discrimination against neurodivergent people can have a profound impact on individuals and their lives. No person should have their dignity, wellbeing, worth, ability or achievements diminished because of their race, disability or neurodivergence.
