We were saddened to hear of the passing of Dame Esther Rantzen.

Alongside her remarkable career in broadcasting and campaigning, Dame Esther was a passionate advocate for older people and understood the profound impact loneliness and isolation can have in later life.

In 2013, she founded The Silver Line, creating a vital source of friendship, conversation and support for older people across the UK. Her work helped bring loneliness among older people into the national conversation and reminded us all of the importance of human connection.

As an organisation supporting older people, we recognise the lasting difference her work has made and the conversations she helped to start.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.

Rest in peace, Dame Esther.

For International Day of Older Persons and Silver Sunday, we’re celebrating everything older people bring to our communities – their knowledge, creativity, friendship and love.

This year’s theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”, reminds us why good care matters: supporting people to keep making choices, pursuing interests and building relationships.

At Greensleeves Care, helping people feel good about care means supporting lives with dignity, purpose and belonging.

To older people everywhere: thank you for all you continue to bring to the world.

As we come to the end of World Alzheimer’s Month, we’re celebrating some of the thoughtful activities that our teams provide for residents living with dementia every day.

At Harleston House in Lowestoft, playdates with nursery children and activities with local schools and colleges bring generations together.
We were so proud when the Activity team’s intergenerational work made them finalists at the Dementia Awards earlier this year.

At Torkington House in West London, residents regularly enjoy visits from pets, and take part in meaningful creative sessions and sensory activities.

At Pelsall Hall in Walsall, the dementia café brings people together over tea, treats, familiar music and conversation. Last week’s autumn theme sparked plenty of shared stories and memories. 🍂

These are just some examples of how people living with dementia are supported and stimulated in Greensleeves Care homes.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day.

Good dementia care starts with knowing the person. How they like their tea. The music they enjoy. The stories they love to tell. The familiar routines that help them feel comfortable and at home.

Across Greensleeves Care, our teams take the time to learn these details because Alzheimer’s may affect someone’s memory, but it does not define who they are.

Today, we’re thinking of everyone living with Alzheimer’s and the families, friends and colleagues who support them.

Next Monday 21 September, World Alzheimer’s Day, Buckler’s Lodge Care Home in Crowthorne near Bracknell is proud to be hosting the Alzheimer’s’ Society to run a Dementia Friends session.

This friendly and interactive session will run by volunteer Dementia Friends Ambassador, Carl Francis from 3pm.

You'll learn more about dementia, how it affects a person and what you can do to help people affected by dementia in your community.

💭 MYTH 7: 'Care homes are overpriced.'

As part of , we're tackling one of the biggest areas of confusion when it comes to care: fees.

There's no denying that care is a significant financial decision. It can feel daunting, especially when families are trying to understand what is included and how to compare options.

But care home fees usually cover far more than accommodation.

In this video, our Family Liaison Manager Nicki explains what is typically included, from 24/7 care and support to meals, activities, wellbeing, housekeeping, laundry, utilities, and the running of a safe, comfortable home.

Non-profit providers like us reinvest income back into care, residents' wellbeing, our homes and our people, rather than paying dividends to shareholders.

💭 MYTH 6: 'Residents stay inside and have to give up their normal lives.'

Through , we're helping people understand that moving into care does not mean stepping away from the world.

Many people imagine care homes as places where life becomes smaller or more disconnected. The reality can be very different.

At Greensleeves Care, strong community connections are part of everyday life. Residents welcome visitors, spend time with local groups, enjoy events and activities, and continue building relationships with the people and places around them.

Care should support people to stay connected, not cut them off. This short video from one of our homes in Lowestoft shows life that is far from dull, with community links woven into the rhythm of the home.

💭 MYTH 5: 'People get mistreated in care homes.'

As part of , we're addressing some of the fears that can make conversations about care feel difficult.

This is one of the most sensitive myths, and we understand why people worry.
Negative stories can stay with us. But they do not reflect the everyday reality of good care, delivered by compassionate, skilled teams who know residents as individuals.

At Henley House, Bob and Roy's experience couldn't be more different.

The two gents have become great friends who spend their days enjoying activities, meeting visitors from the local community, playing pool and sharing plenty of laughs together.

For Bob, moving to Henley House brought reassurance and support when he needed it most.
"I was very pleased to come in and not have to think about getting any food. The food here has always been wonderful."
Roy says it's the people who make the difference. "I've got plenty of help and the staff are super lovely."

Both speak warmly about the varied activities, regular visitors and the friendships they've built since moving in. As Bob puts it: "There's always something to do... and if we join in, that makes all the difference in the world."

Their experience reflects everyday life at Henley House: a place where residents are supported to stay active, connected and independent, while having the reassurance that help and support is always there when they need it.

💭 MYTH 4: 'Care homes are very clinical and hospital-like.'

Through , we want to help people see beyond outdated assumptions about care homes.

One common myth is that care homes feel clinical, impersonal or institutional.

In reality, care homes can be incredibly diverse.

🏡 Some are converted historic buildings full of warmth, charm, and character.

🏡 Others are spacious, purpose-built homes designed for modern comfort, accessibility and 21st-century care.
These collages, showcase different Greensleeves Care homes. What they have in common is a commitment to high-quality care, warmth, and helping residents feel at home.

Congratulations to our resident Richard Eldon, who was crowned Senior King at this year’s Crowthorne Carnival! 🎉One of Crowthorne's village's best-loved community events.

Former Bioscientist Richard Eldon was chosen for his warm personality and love of talking with people. Richard proudly represented Buckler’s Lodge in the carnival procession alongside Senior Queen Nicky Bevan.
