The sun is back for our second instalment of Open Gardens!

Join us in the leafy surroundings of Dulwich Village, where two private gardens will be open to the public for Link Age Southwark.

The first has been described as one of the “most romantic” gardens in Dulwich. It features expansive and varied landscapes, apple, fig and pear trees, a recently uncovered old brick wall, and plenty of space to explore, relax, or simply soak up the atmosphere.

Then, visit the winner of “Nation’s favourite Garden” 2023. A flower-lover's luscious garden developed over 40 years, with blue and white planting round a formal goldfish pond. With glorious colours to attract bees and butterflies.

Come along, enjoy a perfect summer day in two of Dulwich’s most stunning hidden gardens.

2 tickets for £10! Children free. Sorry, no dogs.

North House, 93 Dulwich Village

106 Dulwich Village

Sunday 14th June

2 pm – 5 pm

Tickets include complimentary tea, coffee or squash, with homemade cake (available at 93) and plants available to purchase on the day (available at 105).

Joe has been volunteering with LAS since 2022, making him one of our youngest volunteers. In this series of blogs, he eloquently reflects on his experiences of befriending several older people and the impact those relationships have had on him.

When Paul was 59, he was diagnosed with behavioural variant Frontotemporal Dementia (bvFTD), an early‑onset, rare and degenerative form of dementia.

Early signs of bvFTD are changes in behavioural patterns and, as a result, it can often be misdiagnosed.

At diagnosis, people are advised that the average life expectancy is around eight years.

“I’ll make it to 70,” Paul responded to his wife Jill.

Earlier this month, Paul turned 70.

Through Jill’s unwavering support, her ambassadorship for behavioural dementia, and continued engagement with support groups, Paul has defied expectations and continues to live at their family home.

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing bvFTD or showing symptoms such as progressive changes in personality, behaviour or emotion, please visit Rare Dementia Support (www.raredementiasupport.org) or if you require further support, please contact our dementia team.

Soon, we’ll be hosting our first open garden of the season! Get ready, it’s going to be a scorcher. Why not come to one of Dulwich’s most gorgeous gardens, enjoy delicious cakes and soak up the sunshine?

The garden has a focus on supporting wildlife, resilience and sculpture. Featuring mature trees, topiary and a lily-pad pond, with a romantic area tucked behind a giant hornbeam hedge. Teas, coffees and cakes will be sold, in addition to plants and second-hand gardening books (be sure to bring your own bags for plant sales).

Entry £5. Tickets on the door. Children free. Deep gravel drive might make access tricky for some. No dogs. 49 ALLEYN PARK, West Dulwich, SE21 8AT. Open 2.00pm–5.00pm.

For Mental Health Awareness week, we want to shine a light on challenges people face in later life.

According to Around 22% of men and 28% of women aged 65 years and over are affected by depression (Health and Social Care Information Centre), yet it is estimated that 85% of older people receive no help from the NHS (The Times).

Age Concern and the Mental Health Foundation determined that the five key factors affecting the mental health and wellbeing of older people are: discrimination, participation in meaningful activities, relationships, physical health and poverty.

Link Age Southwark aims to address these factors through our befriending schemes, meaningful social groups, exercise classes, information and support helpline, and through the warmth and inclusivity of our volunteers and staff, we help older people feel connected and valued.

Many thanks to our friends at Alleyn’s for hosting a cracking tea party. Endless cakes, endless conversation and endlessly flowing tea.

Events like these are so important for bridging the gap between generations, beneficial for both our older friends and younger friends. You never know what you’re going to learn from who!

It's so we're giving our Garden SOS programme a very timely shout out! Volunteers assist older friends with some sprucing - allowing those who might not be able to get down & work on their garden to still enjoy the infinite benefits of having a connection to the natural world.

It’s 3 days until the London Landmarks Half Marathon and we want to put a spotlight on Harry and Colin’s befriending relationship. One evening a week, Harry and Colin spend time together chatting, enjoying football, food and overall, just enjoying each other’s company.

Harry is running his first half marathon this weekend to support Link Age Southwark and in honour of his good friend Colin. Click the link below, give the story a read and donate whatever you can to our fantastic five runners!
