Phoenix Futures

Phoenix Futures Phoenix Futures is a charity and housing association providing services for people affected by substance use We expanded and opened more houses in the 1980s.

The UK's first 'Phoenix House' opened its doors in London in 1969, offering Therapeutic Community (TC) based residential rehabilitation. Throughout the 1970s the Phoenix House TC programme adapted and modernised, becoming less rigid and adding Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based group work to the programme. In the early 1990s, a large increase in funding for the substance use field focussed

on HIV prevention. Many of the resulting services were harm reduction based. The first shift in approach came with the opening of the Fountain Project in 1994, an HIV/AIDS palliative care unit in South London. This service took clients on methadone prescriptions for the duration of their stay. From this point on the organisation began to embrace services for people who were trying to abstain, but were not quite at the point of actually achieving it. As these abstinence-oriented services expanded we won prison contracts where the goal of treatment was abstinence but the clients themselves were more ambivalent. As we developed more Tier 3 structured day services, commissioners increasingly asked us to add open access or Tier 2 elements to our provision. Initially, we embraced Tier 2 work that provided open access/entry points to the treatment system. With good services and strong local leadership we expanded into harm reduction. This has become the third stage of the organisation's evolution, so that we now deliver abstinence based, abstinence oriented and harm reduction services. We have always believed that people who use our services are individuals and that the recovery process for each person is different. We will use whatever interventions and models of service delivery help them along their personal path of recovery. As one of the most diverse substance use organisations in the UK we take pride in our ability to support changed lives from the street through to resettlement.

Men’s Mental Health Week is a reminder that none of us should carry everything on our own. Life can feel heavy at times, but talking about what is going on inside is a sign of strength, not weakness. When we look out for one another, we make it easier for everyone to speak openly.

If someone you know seems quieter than usual, check in. If you are finding things tough yourself, reach out to someone you trust. A simple conversation can make a real difference.

Let’s create spaces where men feel safe to talk, to be honest and to be heard. We all deserve that kind of support.

Helen has just graduated as a Peer Mentor and has already thrown herself into supporting the Futures Together social inclusion team.

She co‑facilitates a group, helps with training and is now learning admin skills to support the office when things get busy.

Her confidence is growing every week and she is even starting to speak on stage and on camera about volunteering and her own journey.

Thank you Helen!

Too many people facing multiple disadvantage are passed between services that treat each issue separately. Futures Together in Essex has shown that recovery is far more likely when support is persistent, flexible and built around real lives.
The experiences shared by James, Susan and members of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community show the difference it makes when services do not give up on people.

Mike has been a Peer Mentor Volunteer for a year and has made an incredible impact in Essex. He supported the walking group, worked directly with clients, and was trained to complete assessments so people were not left waiting to enter the service. He also held a small caseload under the supervision of senior staff.

Alongside this, he designed, created and ran his own lived experience group called Strength in Stories. He continued to grow his skills through the Essex Recovery Foundation, gaining confidence in public speaking at conferences and events, and training to facilitate learning for others.

Everything he took on was part of his own development pathway, and every PMV journey looks different. Today we are proud to share that Mike has been hired by Phoenix Futures as one of our new HIU practitioners.

A huge congratulations to him for his hard work, dedication and passion for supporting others.

In Essex, peer mentor volunteer training started today!

We had 8 attendees who will work through three weeks of training ready for their journey as peer mentor volunteers! Our PMVs already in post, support colleagues to deliver the training. We have talks from all services to help the new PMVs decide where they might like to shadow.

Already, they are showing that they all have what it takes to support our services across Essex and we are very proud of them!
