ITF Seafarers Trust

ITF Seafarers Trust The ITF Seafarers’ Trust provides funds for organisations who do work for the benefit of seafarers.

We financially support organisations that directly provide welfare services to seafarers, we act as a catalyst for positive change in the maritime community, and we support long-term programmes that improve maritime workers’ health and welfare through direct and normative change.

Stephen Cotton, ITF General Secretary, and Katie Higginbottom, Head of the ITF Seafarers Trust, travelled to Odesa to see first-hand the conditions port workers are enduring as they keep vital trade moving in the face of war.

Ukraine's port terminals have been repeatedly targeted by Russian attacks - yet they continue to handle cargo every single day. Workers routinely take cover in air raid shelters, then return to work and continue to handle cargo under immense risk.

Let us be clear: no civilian worker should ever be exposed to the dangers of war.

Full solidarity with Профспілка робітників морського транспорту України - ПРМТУ and all transport workers in Ukraine. Peace is union business. ✊🇺🇦

With the year on year increase in reported cases of seafarer abandonment, maritime systems of governance are failing seafarers. We’re proud to be co-funding this new research from the World Maritime University which will explore shortcomings in the international protections for seafarers and explore the impacts on them and their families.

The Seafarers’ Charity ITF - International Transport Workers' Federation ITF Seafarers' Support

In response to the alarming rise in reported seafarer abandonment cases, the World Maritime University has launched a major international research initiative to examine how existing international protections, particularly those under the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), are implemented across flag, port, and labour-supplying States.

The continually growing abandonment numbers are deeply concerning with a total number of 410 new cases in 2025, affecting more than 6,000 seafarers. Behind every statistic are real people and families facing financial hardship, psychological trauma, and uncertainty.

With support from The TK Foundation, ITF Seafarers Trust, and The Seafarers’ Charity, the collaborative research aims to identify gaps in enforcement, understand the lived experiences of abandoned seafarers, and provide evidence-based recommendations for meaningful reform.

As it's International Day for Women in Maritime, it's a great day to announce that last week, four amazing maritime women were nominated to join our Board of Trustees! We're really pleased that Cecilia Rodrigues, Jessica Isbister, Miracle-Ann King and Sharon Li have been nominated by the ITF's Seafarers' and Dockers' Section Committees. They bring a wealth of maritime sector experience to our Board. Whilst we were in Rotterdam, we were also really pleased to be able to make time with our new Trustees to view the new Maritieme Vrouwen (Maritime Women) exhibition at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum. The exhibition highlights the careers of women working in all aspects of the maritime sector of the last 400+ years, showing how many women have been present in our sector all along!
