The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Founded in 1991, the ESCRS is Europe's leading organisation for cataract and refractive surgeons. ESCRS has over 7,500 members from 130 countries world-wide.

ESCRS was founded in 1991 to promote education and research in the field of implant and refractive surgery and to advance and promote the study and practice of ophthalmology. ESCRS seeks to promote and support research in the field of intraocular lens implantation and refractive surgery and the dissemination of the useful results thereof. ESCRS History
The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons evolved from the European Intraocular Implant Club which was established in 1981. The Society is administered by the ESCRS Board, a Board of Ophthalmologists elected by its members. The ESCRS staff based in Dublin, Ireland, are responsible for the organisation of the Society's day-to-day activities.

ESCRS was in Berlin over the weekend for the DOG Academy!

Representing ESCRS and speaking about Clear Standards, Better Vision: Guidelines & IOL Classification were President Burkhard Dick, Council Member Thomas Kohnen, and Committee Member's Laura Maubon and Michael Amon.

It was a great opportunity to meet with colleagues, exchange ideas and take part in conversations shaping the future of ophthalmology.

Challenging cases. Open discussion. Real learning.

At ESCRS 2026, Brave Cases – Real Learning brought a distinctive format to surgical education, combining case presentations with group discussion, audience polling, referee summaries and surgeon takeaways.

Dr. Richard Packard served as referee, while Dr. Ruth Lapid-Gortzak took part as chair, helping to bring different perspectives into the discussion.

🏛️ This week, we continue looking back at some of the formats that made ESCRS 2026 such a dynamic meeting.

The ESCRS Arena introduced a more interactive approach to scientific exchange, bringing debate, audience participation and open discussion into one space.
