Bob Champion Cancer Trust

Bob Champion Cancer Trust Funding scientific research for over 40 years discovering newer and kinder treatments for male cancers

In 2000 the Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe. It is within this facility that their current research projects take place on prostate cancer. In the UK it has been estimated that one in every 14 men will develop prostate cancer. The incidence of this disease is

also increasing and, within the next decade, is set to overtake colon cancer and even lung cancer to become the more common cancer in men. Prostate cancer, therefore, represents a major national health problem. The BCCT team is focused in understanding the detailed or molecular basis of development of prostate cancer. Success of this research will ultimately lead to the development of better clinical management of prostate cancer and to new prostate cancer treatments.

Lucky bidders from a recent event enjoyed a fabulous walking tour of the Newmarket Gallops with local insight led by former leading jockey Ian Watkinson. Ian enjoyed great success riding legendary jump horses including Tingle Creek, Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon in the 1970s.

The tour kicked off at the historical stables of St Gatien, named after the Derby-winning horse St Gatien. Built in the late 1800s, the yard has been a successful training base for over a century and is still a thriving yard today.

After the tour, the group enjoyed lunch at the yard with plenty of stories and racing nostalgia from over the years. We are incredibly grateful to Ian Watkinson and Kate Clark who generously donated this exclusive lot to support our fundraising 💙

"20 years ago, my mother Julia ran the 2006 London Marathon as part of a BBC 1 documentary called 'Run for Glory' for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, after bravely overcoming cancer. 15 years ago, my mother lost her battle with cancer. I was aged 13, and my sister Charlotte just 10 years old. To this day it remains the single most traumatic experience of my life."

"This year, on the 20th anniversary of her London Marathon run, and the 15th anniversary of her death, I will be running the TCS London Marathon this Sunday for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in her memory and to raise funds for the charity she loved so much. As well as a JustGiving page, I've also set up a silent auction with some donated lots, all the details are in the link below."
