On behalf of everyone at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), we want to express a big thank you to everyone who attended the Roebuck Lecture 2026 – in person and virtually – yesterday evening. The event proved a resounding success.

Special thanks must go to our speaker this year, Dr Crina Baltag FCIArb, for delivering such a thought-provoking lecture on a timely topic (Revisiting the Paradox of Trust: Disclosure and the Changing Dynamics of Impartiality in International Arbitration), and to our Q&A moderator, Kevin Nash, Director General of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), for curating an engaging follow-up discussion.

The welcome message and closing remarks were delivered by Don MacIntyre, CEO of Ciarb, and Cesar Pereira C.Arb FCIArb, President of Ciarb, also attended the event.

Thank you as well to our venue hosts over at the International Dispute Resolution Centre (The IDRC) and Arbitra International for their support.

“The Ciarb's Fellows and Friends Reception was the highlight of my London International Disputes Week (LIDW) week. As a recent Queen Mary University of London graduate, the Ciarb London Branch has given me something rare: a genuine community. I left with new friends, sharper thinking, and a real sense of belonging in the ADR world.”

Dr Crina Baltag, FCIArb will deliver her Roebuck Lecture – Revisiting the Paradox of Trust: Disclosure and the Changing Dynamics of Impartiality in International Arbitration – on 18 June.

Ciarb’s Director of External Affairs, Cristen Bauer, said: “This is a timely and important lecture that speaks to the very foundation of the arbitral process. Independence and impartiality of arbitrators is essential to the integrity of that process. But as rules and guidelines are updated, we must seek to strike the right balance between transparency that builds trust with users, and a process that remains effective and workable in practice.”

The follow-up discussion and Q&A will be moderated by Kevin Nash, Director General of the London Court of International Arbitration.

This event is free to attend virtually, but registration is required.

The arbitration community convened in Madrid recently to introduce the Hawar Principles by The Hawar Circle, a group set up by the Bahrain Council for International Dispute Resolution to expand on Ciarb’s London Centenary Principles. Discussions covered everything from AI and third-party funding to electronic signatures for awards.

Ciarb’s former President, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab C.Arb, FCIArb, spoke on the 10 requirements of a safe arbitral seat, while Ciarb’s President, Cesar Pereira C.Arb FCIArb, delivered the closing address.

Cristen Bauer, Ciarb's Director of External Affairs, said: “We’re pleased to see the continued relevance of the London Centenary Principles in inspiring a renewed and important dialogue about what makes an arbitration seat truly safe."

Dr Crina Baltag, FCIArb will deliver the Roebuck Lecture on 18 June at the The IDRC (the International Dispute Resolution Centre) – see photos – in London.

Of her lecture, Crina said: 'International arbitration is built on trust, but we are reaching a point where the very mechanisms meant to secure that trust, particularly disclosure, are beginning to unsettle it. In an era of expanding data and unprecedented visibility over arbitrators and parties, disclosure is no longer a stabilising obligation, but a moving target. The result is a system in which more transparency does not necessarily produce more confidence, but often more doubt.

This lecture interrogates how impartiality is being reshaped under these pressures, and what that means for arbitrators, counsel, and parties who are navigating a system that is becoming more transparent and exposed.'

A follow-up discussion and Q&A will be moderated by the Director General of the London Court of International Arbitration, Kevin Nash.

Join us in person or virtually – tickets are £15 for Ciarb members and £50 for non-members. Virtual attendance is free, but registration is required.
