Earlier this year, our Patron Marsha de Cordova MP visited Kenya and saw the work of two Able Child Africa Network members: Action Network for the Disabled and The Action Foundation
What stayed with her most was the strength of the parents she met, particularly the mothers whose determination, resilience and advocacy are helping children with disabilities to thrive.
Marsha was especially interested in the parent support groups and their table savings schemes. These community-led models are helping families build financial resilience through trust and collective action. She reflected on how similar approaches have historically supported immigrant communities in the UK when access to formal banking was limited.
Across the programmes, she saw well-established centres and staff and volunteers whose deep commitment to children and families was unmistakable. Her visit captured something central to Able Child’s approach: local civil society organisations are the heart of our work.
The international development sector is facing real funding pressures, and children with disabilities remain too often overlooked. But there is also powerful reason for optimism. Strong local organisations continue to deliver remarkable impact, drawing on the leadership, expertise and trust that already exist within their communities.
Through the Able Child Africa Network, we invest in that local leadership, connect organisations to learn and grow together, and help amplify their collective voice.
Marsha left Kenya encouraged by the organisations, communities and families she met. We did too.
Together, we can ensure that no child with a disability is left behind.
