"I think a lot of us were surprised to find that we were close or already at that burnout stage."

It started with a chance conversation in a hospital lift.

When oncology registrar Dr Gehan Soosaipillai met art therapist Megan Tjasink in a hospital lift, his curiosity sparked a conversation about burnout, which led to a pioneering art therapy programme for healthcare professionals, followed by research evidence showing its effectiveness.

More than ten years later and working as a medical oncology consultant, Dr Soosaipillai talks to Julia Ruppert on what he's learned about burnout, supporting healthcare workers and why art therapy could offer something different.

Burnout among NHS staff continues to be a major concern in the NHS.

High-quality research published in the British Medical Journal Public Health has highlighted that carefully implemented art therapy programmes could offer a valuable form of support for healthcare staff at risk of burnout.
