📚 1997: Two new programmes become part of the Lindamood-Bell story.

Nanci Bell published Seeing Stars®, designed to develop symbol imagery, the ability to visualise letters and words for reading and spelling. Long overlooked in literacy instruction, symbol imagery addresses what is a missing piece for many struggling readers.

Nanci Bell and Kimberly Tuley also published On Cloud Nine® Math, designed to develop numerical imagery for number sense and mathematical reasoning.

Nearly 30 years later, both programmes remain core to Lindamood-Bell instruction and our commitment to helping students learn to their potential.

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning

📖 1998: The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing® (LiPS®) programme is published.

Lindamood-Bell co-founder and speech-language pathologist Patricia Lindamood and her daughter, Phyllis Lindamood, revised the Auditory Discrimination in Depth (ADD) programme and published the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing® programme for Reading, Spelling, and Speech (LiPS®).

The LiPS® programme helps students develop phonemic awareness by teaching them to discover and label the mouth movements that produce speech sounds. Students learn to identify and sequence sounds in words, then apply those skills to reading, spelling, and speech.

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning

As we continue looking back at the milestones that have shaped Lindamood-Bell, we move into the early 1990s and an important step in our growth.

📍 1992: First Learning Center outside of San Luis Obispo opens in Sacramento, California

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning
As we continue looking back at the milestones that have shaped Lindamood-Bell, we’re returning to where it all began.

📖 1986: Nanci Bell publishes Visualizing and Verbalizing®

The same year Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes was founded, co-founder Nanci Bell published Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking®, introducing a groundbreaking method to develop concept imagery, the ability to create an imaged gestalt from language.

The program grew from Nanci’s work with students who could read words but struggled to understand, remember, and think critically about what they read. She recognized that these students often had difficulty creating mental imagery for language, an underlying sensory-cognitive function important for comprehension.

Visualizing and Verbalizing® remains central to our approach to developing language comprehension and higher-order thinking skills.

🎉 40 Years of Changing Lives Through Learning

This year marks a very special milestone for Lindamood-Bell: 40 years!
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking back at some of the milestones that have shaped our story. From our beginnings in 1986 to the work we do today, there is so much to celebrate.

And where better to begin than at the beginning?

đź“· 1986: Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes is founded.

Pat Lindamood and Nanci Bell co-founded Lindamood-Bell with a shared belief that all students can be taught to read to their potential. From the beginning, our approach was grounded in the understanding that reading is a sensory-cognitive process and that the underlying skills can be developed.

What began 40 years ago has grown into a journey we’re excited to revisit and share with you.

Follow along as we celebrate 40 years of changing lives through learning and look back at the milestones that brought us here.

We’re continuing our four-part video series from a recent presentation by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, author of Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing®.

In this second clip, Nanci explores the role of symbol imagery (SI) in the component skills involved in reading and discusses the SI Test as a predictor of reading skill.

How does the ability to visualize letters and words connect to reading development? And where does symbol imagery fit alongside skills such as phonemic awareness and decoding?

We’re sharing a four-part video series from a recent presentation by Lindamood-Bell co-founder Nanci Bell, author of Seeing Stars® and Visualizing and Verbalizing®.

The Reading Wars Must End is especially timely as educators continue to navigate different approaches to reading instruction and questions about how students learn to read.

In this first clip, “The Interplay of Reading,” Nanci looks at the history of the “reading wars,” including synthetic and analytic phonics, and the processes that work together in skilled reading.

This is the first of four clips we’ll be sharing. Follow us to catch the rest of the series.
