Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🌍

Today we’re celebrating teachers and educators across the UK and around the world - and the vital relationship between teachers and their students.

This year marks 60 years since the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers, which sets out important principles around teachers’ pay, working conditions, professional autonomy and other rights.

Six decades on, teachers are facing new and ongoing challenges from rising workloads to artificial intelligence.

It’s time to invest in teachers and public education globally and ensure every educator is supported, respected and valued.

The Education Secretary has announced another overhaul of Ofsted’s school inspection system.

Commenting on the announcement, NEU general secretary Daniel Kebede said the union will work with Lucy Powell to secure urgent relief from the detrimental pressure created by the current high-stakes system.

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, in which thousands of Londoners came together to prevent the British Union of Fascists marching to Whitehall. It demonstrated in no uncertain terms the power of community and resistance when it comes to combatting right wing ideals.

Ninety years later, the actions of the counter-protestors at the Battle of Cable Street in protecting their neighbours are just as relevant today.

Educators have a part to play in ensuring that young people grow up understanding that everyone is entitled to respect and dignity. The NEU stands proudly amongst others in the Alliance who are determined to protect against and challenge the growing far right.
