School-Home Support (SHS)

School-Home Support (SHS) We are a national charity working with children and families in England to address barriers to education through whole family support.

School-Home Support (SHS) is a charity working with children and families to maximise educational opportunities and improve life chances. Partnering with schools, local authorities and families, SHS looks beyond the classroom to understand and tackle the issues affecting children’s learning, such as housing, poverty and mental ill health. Since 1984, we have used early intervention to break interg

enerational cycles of deprivation and low aspiration, replacing them with children in school and ready to learn. The biggest influence on a child’s life is their experiences at home. SHS works with families to address a variety of issues, including mental and physical health needs, insecure housing, domestic violence and poverty. Without this support children are much less likely to be in school, ready to learn. All of our services are designed to support families to overcome these issues as soon as possible. By intervening early we give children the chance to maximise the opportunities available to them.

*We noticed a small error in our campaign video. We want to give you accurate information. Below is our updated video. *

As we come to the end of May, we are reflecting on our School Attendance Gap Campaign and specifically, the work our practitioners do to keep severely absent children in school for an extra term.

An extra term learning, playing with friends and being part of the school community.

Watch our video to find out more about the School Attendance Gap Campaign and why closing the attendance gap matters for all children and their families.

Every year, we run User Voice Week, a chance to really listen to the children and families we work with and understand what their needs and day-to-day experiences are like.

It’s about creating space for honest conversations and making sure people feel heard. What families tell us directly shapes what we do next.
By working with families, not just for them, we’re able to co-create services that actually reflect real needs, ensuring our support stays relevant, responsive, and there when it matters most.

Want to hear what families shared with us this year? Head to our website to find out more.

When Manny was referred to School-Home Support his attendance was at 47%, missing more than half of his education.

He regularly took time off school due to sickness and was late on the days he would come in. Practitioner Sally worked with the whole family to understand the root causes of Manny absenteeism.

Find out how she supported the whole family and helped Manny get back to school, ready to learn.

New national statistics published this week by the Department for Education on pupil absence in school show encouraging signs of progress.

Overall absence and persistent absence rates are falling compared to last year. However, there’s still a very concerning trend: severe absence has increased again to 2.26% of pupils. This means 176,000 children were severely absent in the 2024/2025 academic year.

Absence rates are still higher than before the pandemic. We’ve seen a 166% increase in severe absence compared to pre-pandemic levels when it stood at just 0.85% in 2018/2019.
