Children of the Mekong

Children of the Mekong Through education, we give children in Southeast Asia the chance to dream of a better future.

Children of the Mekong is a London-based charity registered with the UK Charity Commission (No. 1116375) and the UK branch of “Enfants du Mékong”, a French charity founded in 1958. Our aim is to improve access and quality of education for the poorest children and their communities in seven countries in Southeast Asia. We run 3 types of programmes: child sponsorships, one-off development projects and education centres.

Children of the Mekong offers a poignant glimpse into the daily lives of children in Southeast Asia, through the eyes of Christophe Keip and the words of Antoine Besson.

‘Books or bricks’ is a series of deeply moving portraits that explores an all-too-familiar reality: should they go to school or go to work?

A sensitive and compelling exhibition, designed from a child’s perspective, to help us better understand the challenges of this silent struggle.

Today is the day. 🟥
The World Day Against Child Labour.

Worldwide, 138 million children are still in child labour. They should be in classrooms, not workplaces, fields, factories, or mines. Education is how we change this. It is the single most effective route out of child labour, and into a future a child gets to choose for themselves.

At Children of the Mekong, every donation funds our education programmes across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and East Timor. This appeal is direct support for the work that breaks the cycle of child labour wherever we find it.

If today moves you, this is the day to act.

Thank you to everyone who has walked this month with us. The countdown ends today. The fight continues tomorrow, and the day after that.

Tomorrow is the day. 🟥

The World Day Against Child Labour.
Tomorrow, we'll stand with the 138 million children worldwide who are still trapped in child labour. Children just like the boy in this photo — children who should be in classrooms, learning, hoping, growing. Not working.

For decades, Children of the Mekong has fought for those children through education programmes that give them a real chance to escape child labour and choose their own future. Every donation funds this work directly, directly supporting the fight against child labour wherever we find it.

If you've been waiting, this is the moment.

Just 2 days to go. 🟥

138 million children worldwide are still trapped in child labour. The World Day Against Child Labour is on 12 June — a day to stand up, speak out, and act.

For decades, Children of the Mekong has worked across Southeast Asia to keep children in school and out of work, through education programmes funded entirely by donations. Every gift between now and 12 June makes a direct impact: more children supported, more childhoods reclaimed, more futures redirected.
Make it count.

4 days to go. 🟥

Worldwide, 138 million children are still in child labour. Education is the most effective way to end this — keeping children in school and out of work, and giving them a future they get to choose.

At Children of the Mekong, we run education programmes across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and East TIMOR. This appeal is unrestricted: every donation goes straight to the bigger fight — funding the schooling that turns child labourers back into children.

Just 1 week to go until the World Day Against Child Labour. 🟥
Worldwide, 138 million children are still trapped in child labour. We believe education is the most powerful way to break that cycle — and your donation is what makes that work possible.

At Children of the Mekong, we run education programmes across Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and, helping vulnerable children stay in school instead of being pulled into work. Every donation goes directly to the bigger fight — funding the education programmes that turn child labourers back into children.

The countdown is closing. Every gift counts.

My name is CHEAT Eirak. I am 21 years old and currently in my third year of Civil Engineering at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. I come from Oddar Meanchey province, a rural region near the Thai border.

I have been sponsored by Children of the Mekong for the past 10 years. I am a motivated and responsible person, passionate about learning and eager to improve both my technical and interpersonal skills.

My dream is to become a professional civil engineer, capable of designing and building safe, sustainable infrastructure such as roads, bridges and buildings. I want to contribute to the development of Cambodia by improving living conditions and supporting modern urban growth. I also hope to continue my studies abroad and one day create my own company in the construction materials sector.

Life at the Mérieux Centre supports me both academically and personally. Academically, it helps me continue my studies, strengthen my knowledge and discipline, while also supporting my tuition and living expenses. Personally, it helps me build confidence, responsibility, teamwork and communication skills.

The support I receive truly changes my life. It reduces the financial pressure on my family and allows me to focus more on my studies and personal growth. It motivates me to work harder and achieve better results. It also inspires me to give back to my community and help others in the future.

– Cheat Eirak, student at the Docteur Christophe Mérieux Centre in Phnom Penh

A huge thank you to all our sponsors — you are changing lives 💚

2 weeks until the World Day Against Child Labour. 🟥

Behind every statistic is a child who could be smiling, learning, playing — but isn't. 138 million children, worldwide, are in child labour today.

Every smile we see across our projects exists because someone chose to act. Sponsorship, donations, awareness — it all adds up to childhoods reclaimed.

Donate today to keep more children where they belong:
