Children of the Mekong Through education, we give children in Southeast Asia the chance to dream of a better future.

Children of the Mekong is a London-based charity registered with the UK Charity Commission (No. 1116375) and the UK branch of “Enfants du Mékong”, a French charity founded in 1958. Our aim is to improve access and quality of education for the poorest children and their communities in seven countries in Southeast Asia. We run 3 types of programmes: child sponsorships, one-off development projects and education centres.

When school closes for the summer, many children in the villages around KM42, on the Bolaven Plateau in southern Laos, head into the fields and coffee plantations to help their families earn a living. Long months away from the classroom take their toll.

Over the holidays, our summer camp keeps 100 young people learning and well fed. Across 57 days they get lessons, English classes, games and a hot meal every day, at no cost to their families and for just a couple of pounds a child a day.

In Myanmar, years of conflict have pushed many young people out of the classroom. Some have lost two or three years of schooling; others finished secondary school but cannot afford to study any further.

For the 2026-2027 year, we are funding scholarships and short vocational courses for 34 young people in Kayah State and Yangon, in fields like English, IT, accounting and teaching. Each course lasts under a year and is chosen to lead to steady, reliable work.

In Talugtug, in the rural Philippines, a small early years centre has more children wanting to learn than it has space for. Right now it can only take 30, so some families have to send their little ones to schools further away and less suited to them.

We are building one new classroom and turning an old storeroom into another. Together they will make room for 40 more children, growing the centre from 30 pupils to 70, in bright, safe spaces with proper ventilation and facilities.

For a child, that village is made up of their parents, their family and those close to them, but also their teachers. And for our sponsored children, that village includes their sponsor too, whose moral support means so much to them! 💚

To everyone who shared a post, passed one on to a friend, or quietly set up a sponsorship this month — thank you.

It turns into something very ordinary and very enormous: a school bag, a uniform, a desk with a name on it, and a child who gets to keep going. Since 1958 that has been the whole idea, and it still only works because of you.

Long Kim is 14 and lives in Cambodia with an older brother and parents who work on the farms. When money runs short she joins them in the fields to help the family make ends meet. She loves art in every form she can get her hands on.

She wants to be a teacher.

Agnes wants to be a nurse.
