A child can cause harm and still be a child in crisis.
Both things can be true.
This is one of the biggest challenges we face when talking about child to parent abuse (CPA).
If we only focus on the harm, we risk missing the child behind the behaviour.
If we only focus on the child’s difficulties, we risk minimising the fear, exhaustion and trauma experienced by parents and carers.
The reality is much more complicated.
Since 2012, Joe Lettieri and I have worked alongside over 1,200 families experiencing child to parent abuse through Family Based Solutions.
We have sat with parents who describe feeling frightened in their own homes.
We have worked with young people who struggle to explain why they are hurting the very people they often love and need.
And we have seen what becomes possible when families are supported to move away from blame and towards safety, responsibility and repair.
This is why we wrote Understanding Child to Parent Abuse: A Solution Focused Approach.
This book is not just about understanding behaviours. It is about understanding people.
It shares what families have taught us about shame, fear, survival, relationships and change.
The question cannot only be:
“How do we stop this behaviour?”
We also need to ask:
“What conversations, relationships and support need to exist so that harm is no longer needed?”
The preview is now available to read, and the book can be pre-ordered here:

One with less blame.
And more possibility.
Child to parent abuse (CPA) remains a complex and often misunderstood form of family harm, frequently hidden within wider narratives of behaviour, safeguarding
