Last Wednesday I felt incredibly privileged to be at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Good Grief Trust. 💜
It was a beautiful and very moving occasion, but for me, the most poignant part was listening to bereaved people share their stories.
Many had experienced the devastating loss of someone they loved and, from that grief, had gone on to create charities in memory of those who had died, turning their own experiences into something that could help others.
There is something very special about peer-to-peer support. When someone who has been through grief says, “I understand, I’ve been there too,” it can make the hardest days feel just a little less lonely.
Talking about the difficult days, the sadness and the things that people don't always understand about grief can help someone else realise that what they are feeling is normal, and that they are not alone.
I truly believe it is the lived experience, kindness and support of others that can help people find their way through grief.
The Good Grief Trust now brings together more than 1,400 bereavement charities and organisations under one umbrella. That means we can help signpost bereaved people towards the support they need.
At Mortlake Crematorium, we see every day how important support is, not just at the time of a funeral, but before, during and after a death.
I have huge respect and appreciation for every person who has taken their own experience of loss and created something to help others. What an incredible legacy for the people who have died.
Congratulations to The Good Grief Trust on 10 wonderful years of bringing people together and making sure that no one has to go through grief alone. 💜
