The Girls' Network Opening up a world of possibility to girls from the least advantaged communities through mentoring, work experience and a network of female role models.

We believe that all girls have a right to be able to access the best opportunities available, and should not be limited by gender. We believe girls have the right to high aspirations and knowledge of their self-worth and capacity to shape their world. We have seen across classrooms, too many girls unable to speak out or express themselves. Both research and our everyday teaching experience shows there to be a real poverty of aspiration and self-worth amongst girls in both mixed and single-sex schools. This is a problem that is echoed across businesses and professions around the world. STEM subjects struggle to recruit girls; on average, FTSE 100 companies have only 17.3 % female representation on their boards, and there are only two FTSE 100 female Chief Executives. This is not because girls are not capable. This is because they believe they will not succeed. Or others believe they will not succeed. The Girls’ Network

Mentors
We want to smash through any ceiling stopping girls realising their potential. We want to offer girls mentorship from inspirational and motivated women across a range of professions and from a wide range of backgrounds, to develop confidence, inspire high aspirations and facilitate incredible futures. Work experience
We want to open up meaningful work experience across a range of industries, especially those with a low percentage of women, to provide training and skills development and an on-going relationship with these girls. Working with schools
We want to work with schools – teachers and students – to ensure the classroom and the corridors and the playground are all places where girls are supported to thrive. Not at the expense of boys, but in partnership with boys, with the support and encouragement all of their peers and their teachers. The Girls’ Network believes that mentorship and work experience can open the door to high aspiration and opportunities not always afforded to girls.

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of teaming up with our friends at Virgin to record a short film as part of their Local Legends initiative. 🎬

We’re so grateful to the Virgin team for helping us share our work and spotlight the real power of mentoring. In the film, you’ll hear from our CEO & Co-founder Becca Dean, alongside our wonderful Ambassadors, Salma and Tamara, sharing the impact having a mentor has had on their lives, and our lovely London mentor Roxanne on what motivates her to give back.✨

We had a fantastic day filming at Virgin HQ, where the girls also got to sit in on an inspiring panel event with women leaders from across the group, including Holly Branson (Chief Vision Officer at Virgin) and Danni Rush (CEO of Virgin Experience Days).

Virgin have invited us back again, and we’re so excited to take students from some of our partner schools to another panel event next week - more on that to follow!

October 1st marks the countdown to International Day of the Girl on October 11th, and this year we are launching our Back Her Future appeal! 🌟

Times are tough for girls and young women right now for so many reasons. But every girl deserves to feel optimistic, excited, and hopeful about what lies ahead.

Being a 15-year-old girl isn't easy. The pressure of school, the uncertainty of what comes next, and a world full of big decisions can make the future feel completely overwhelming.

Having someone outside of school or home to talk to can make all the difference.

A mentor gives a young woman a dedicated, neutral space to process her worries, talk through her hopes and dreams, and start building confidence in what she is capable of. 🌱

😞 Today marks International Equal Pay Day

On average, women earn so much less than men that it’s as if they stop being paid for the rest of the year. That’s the reality of the gender pay gap - women working nearly three extra months to make the same amount as their male colleagues.

This is why our work matters. Girls and young women need the confidence, skills and support to advocate for themselves in the workplace, to know they can reach any level, and to step into their careers with ambition and self-belief 💚

"Don't worry Mr Burnham - I'm not out for your job... yet!" 😜

Yesterday, our incredible Ambassador Ishrat took to the floor at the Houses of Parliament as part of My Maiden Speech - an amazing initiative organised by Speakers Trust to bring young voices directly into the heart of British politics.

Ishrat was accompanied by 13 other inspiring young people from diverse backgrounds, each speaking passionately about their lived experiences and their drive to make positive change through democracy and politics.

Reflecting on her journey with The Girls' Network, Ishrat shared how her experiences helped transform her from an "anxious, timid teenager who felt she didn't belong in political spaces to a young woman who could envision myself as Prime Minister."

In her speech, Ishrat asked the audience to turn her words into action by doing one (or more!) of three simple things:

💚Mentor a young person.

💚Create work experience opportunities for young people within your organisation.

💚Support organisations like The Girls' Network, who work every day to help young people build the confidence and aspirations to enter any space - 'not despite where they come from, but because of it.'

A huge thank you to the team at Speakers Trust for organising such an empowering platform for these young people, and well done to all the young people who spoke so passionately - they were all incredibly inspiring 💫
