Remembering Dame Stephanie “Steve” Shirley CH (1933 – 2025)
A workplace revolutionary, pioneering IT entrepreneur and ardent philanthropist, Dame Stephanie’s extraordinary life began in 1939 when, aged just 5, she arrived in Britain as an unaccompanied Kindertransport refugee fleeing N**i Germany.

In 1962, she founded Freelance Programmers (later F International), an all-women software company that pioneered remote working decades before its time. Ultimately valued at $3 billion, it created 70 women millionaires and transformed opportunities for professional women in technology.

After retiring in 1993, she gave over £67 million through the Shirley Foundation to groundbreaking causes in IT, autism research, and beyond. The UK’s first Ambassador for Philanthropy, bestselling author of Let It Go, TED speaker with over 2 million views, and one of only 65 people worldwide appointed Companion of Honour - her accolades matched her impact.

A proud supporter of the Women of the Year, Dame Stephanie will be remembered for her courage, generosity, and unwavering belief in giving back 💫

A photo says 1000 words 📸

We're still in awe of the women who came together last week to share their knowledge and experience with those just starting their careers, and with the confidence and openness displayed by those wanting to learn and grow.

Here at Women of the Year, we strive to empower women from all walks of life. Women who are fiercely intelligent, ambitious, and full of drive. Our favourite quote from the night was to "always remember to lift as you climb."

Women of the Year X The 93% Club | Networking Event Highlights

This week, Women of the Year partnered with The 93% Club for an inspiring evening of networking, storytelling and shared ambition.

It was a true privilege to be surrounded by a room full of powerhouse women — those blazing trails and those just beginning theirs.

Our brilliant panel, featuring Lily Makurah, Joanna Luke, and Imogen Carr, and expertly moderated by Lucrezia Millarini, shared honest, empowering insights on navigating career journeys across diverse industries. Their words sparked energy, connection and confidence.

At Women of the Year, our mission has always been to recognise, connect, and empower women from every walk of life — both the celebrated and the unsung. The 93% Club is doing vital work to ensure that state-educated individuals can access the networks and opportunities they deserve.

Together, we're creating a future where more women can rise, lead, and thrive — and where lifting others as we climb is the norm, not the exception.

A heartfelt thank you to our generous hosts Susan Ball and RSM UK, and to Vix Brenninkmeijer and Farah Idris for making this event possible.

Let’s keep the momentum going 💫

📽️ This VE Day, we honour the women who helped win the war from behind the scenes.

As the world marks Victory in Europe Day, Women of the Year celebrates the unsung heroines of Bletchley Park — the brilliant women whose minds cracked the codes that helped bring WWII to an end.

In this short video from a previous Women of the Year Lunch, we shine a spotlight on the thousands of women who worked tirelessly in secrecy, from codebreaking and data analysis to engineering and operations. Their contributions were critical to Allied success, yet many of their stories remained hidden for decades.

Bletchley Park wasn’t just a place of intelligence gathering — it was a place of quiet courage and groundbreaking achievement. Over 75% of the workforce there were women. They made history, even when history wasn’t watching.

This VE Day, we remember them. We thank them. And we ensure their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
